Climate Incentives for Everyday People

2 of 11

Our challenge is…

  • Problem: Traditional green incentives have high upfront costs and are bottlenecked by the government.
    • EV’s, home energy efficiency, solar roofs
  • Objective: Provide a low entry barrier means to incentivize environmental stewardship.
    • With just a $NEAR wallet, YOU can begin earning money for bettering the environment around you

Whose problem is it?

The Planet:

  • By bringing stewardship to the masses, not only will they have a direct impact, but they will be more likely to vote for policies for corporate climate responsibility.

The NEAR Ecosystem:

  • The concept of linking oracle data with a sliding incentive system can inspire other use cases to incentivize desirable behaviours such as volunteering, mentorship, civic responsibility etc.
  • Good opportunity to teach younger generations about NEAR ecosystem and stewardship

The Individual:

  • Physical and psychological Quality of Life (QoL) are positively correlated to a better surrounding environment. You can be rewarded for increasing you QoL!

Dynamic Royalties and Media

  • We linked climate data with an NFT owner’s royalties; the better the climate data, the higher the owner’s royalties if they sell
    • This effectively increases the value of the NFT as the climate data set gets better!
  • We gave the NFT a visual representation of this change, by changing the image as the data set changed.

Example of Dynamic Updates Based on API Values

95% Seller Royalty 80% Seller Royalty 0% Seller Royalty

Virtual World

  • We created a virtual world, where you can walk around and view the “progress” of other NFT series, further enhancing the social aspect of stewardship

How did we do it?

Oracle:

  • Utilized Git Actions to call to an API and collect carbon emission data. This data was then brought on-chain using a set method on the smart contract.

Contract:

  • Using the oracle data, the royalties were synchronously updated whenever new data came in.
  • The NFT media was updated independent of the rest of the metadata only when queried by the frontend to reduce on-chain storage usage.

Why would it survive?

  • Through the purchasing of NFTs, revenue can be generated by modifying the existing royalties to cut ourselves a slice to act as a small fee.
  • Since this is project is meant more for doing good than profit we plan for profits to be small. The profits are aimed to be enough for maintenance of the oracle and contract if issues arise.
  • As the concept has room to grow into other areas such as volunteering and civic responsibility, we believe the future of this project is bright

What do we need to keep working?

Time

  • Generally we would need at least 1+ months to focus on the following
    • Expand this concept to other desirable behaviours such as volunteering
    • Creating a network of oracles to create trustworth data
    • Make smart contract more robust and the frontend more presentable

Funding and People

  • $5000 to hire and build a community of artists to produce interesting art that shows different stages of a healthy environment to give the site more life
  • $50000 to hire developers to help build and scale up the idea to handle more features and increased traffic
