WHAT IS SCHOOLWIDE TITLE I?

* Funding is provided based on the number of students enrolled who demonstrate financial need

* Need is determined by the free and reduced lunch percentage of each school building

* Districts can receive these funds through being designated either targeted assistance or schoolwide

* To be considered schoolwide a school must have 40% or more of their students who qualify for free or reduced lunch

  • Brooklyn School is a designated schoolwide Title I School
  • In schoolwide programs, funds can be used to improve student achievement throughout the school regardless of economic need
  • Staff focus on improving educational programming for all students while paying careful attention to those from low-income families

WHO RECEIVES TITLE I SERVICES?

  • Brooklyn School utilizes an assessment-based process to identify students who need additional support in reading
  • Scores from screening and benchmark assessments, as well as, teacher input ensures that students in need of assistance receive additional support
  • Students are prioritized based on educational need

TITLE I INTERVENTIONS

  • Brooklyn School uses the most current research-based interventions focused on components of the science of reading.

  • Brooklyn School uses Sonday System which is a skill based, multi-sensory instructional program that is systematic, sequential, cumulative, and aligns with the common core standards.

  • Extended sessions of Heggerty and Fundations are utilized to provide additional support

TITLE I INTERVENTIONS

  • Interventions are based on student’s individual needs in the five components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension

  • Interventions may include more targeted explicit instruction, increased repetition, more frequent opportunities to respond, smaller group sizes, and an increased amount of intervention throughout the day

WHAT IS A SCHOOL-PARENT COMPACT

  • The Title I Compact is an agreement between the parent, student, and school. It details the shared responsibility for each group.
  • It is necessary to ensure that each party adequately participates in the education of the child.
  • The Title I Compact can be found on the Brooklyn City Schools Website and the school office.

PARENT & FAMILY ENGAGEMENT PLAN

  • Title I legislation requires each district to develop a parent & family engagement policy for each Title I building.
  • The plan developed in each Title I building should be developed with parents and sets the expectation and framework for parent engagement in the building.
  • Schools receiving Title I funds must implement programs and activities to promote parent involvement in academic learning.
  • These plans should detail how each building will encourage parent engagement and provide opportunities for parents to increase their knowledge and skills while working as partners to improve their child’s educational performance.
