Soil Lab Prep - listen to directions from the instructor.

  1. Put 1 inch of soil in the test vial
  2. Put a drop of Dawn Dish soap
  3. Fill the vial to ¾ full with water
  4. SHAKE IT TO THE DURATION OF THIS SONG
  5. Place on the book shelves to rest for 24 hours. Make sure your name is on the vial/paper

How did the soil, at your home, get there? By wind, water, weathering, glaciers? The secret lies within understanding the process of soil formation. Wisconsin is home to various methods of soil formation, glaciers are the most interesting method of soil formation, to me. You can certainly see where the glaciers did not reach land in our state!

Today, we are going to focus on how, the soil we stand and build upon, got to its current form. Check out the reading and ppt and wskt to help your understanding. When you are ready, please complete the Exit Ticket

UNIT TOPIC:

PLANT SYSTEMS

ESSENTIAL QUESTION(S):

How do plants impact humans? How do the changes in a plant’s environment affect the plant’s growth? How do my personal interest and abilities influence future career choices?

FOCUS:

This topic will focus on how humans use plants in their daily lives, their basic anatomy, environmental factors and explore careers.

ENDURING UNDERSTANDING:

What would the world be without enough plants? Plants harvest the sun’s energy and convert raw nutrients into life-sustaining carbohydrates, fats, and oils. Animals benefit from the energy stored as carbohydrates in plant material. Plants also covert carbon dioxide, a byproduct of respiration, into oxygen animals need to survive. Essentially, plants are a vital link required to sustain life on earth. Humans are dependent upon plants for food, fiber, fuel, and many other important purposes that add value to our lives.

WI AG-ED Standard(s):

PS1: Students will apply knowledge of plant classification, anatomy, and physiology to the production and management of plants.

PS2: Students will prepare and implement a plant management plan that addresses the influence of environmental factors, nutrients, and soil on plant growth.

PS3: Students will propagate, culture, and harvest plants.

CD1: Students will consider, analyze, and apply an awareness of self, identity, and culture to identify skills and talents.
