Project? What?

The Personal Project is the capstone activity for the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP)- grades 6-10. This activity is meant to be a demonstration of soft skills developed in all of the student’s classes and to be an exploration of an area of personal interest.

Why does it matter?

  1. The Personal Project is the capstone activity for MYP.
  2. The Personal Project is a model of the kind of projects done in IB 11th and 12th grades.
  3. The Personal Project is a chance for students to explore an area of personal interest.

What will you end up with?

The final result that the students will submit is a reflective report.

  • The report will include discussion of the process you followed
  • evidence of your work and
  • the product you made.

How does this work?

Everything is handled via ManageBac.

You will be assigned a teacher supervisor/mentor to support you through the process.

There will be lunch time and afternoon work sessions for you to get support (announced via ManageBac).

Everything gets submitted on ManageBac on March 1st.

The following items are NOT allowed.

  • No projects related to: drugs, alcohol, weapons.

  • The build of any type of weapon

  • The making of any drug or alcohol

  • No experimenting on living creatures-- this means animals, people (including yourself), younger siblings, etc.

Food Restrictions

Making solely a food dish is not sufficient for this project.

  • Nothing out of a box
  • All components must be from scratch

Food projects must include 1 of the following:

  1. Culinary Skills
  2. Recipe Modification
  3. Multicultural Dinner
  1. Culinary Skills
    1. What is the story behind the recipe?
    2. Record a cooking show, with how to steps to make your dish. Include your recipe
    3. Must show people eating your dish and giving feedback
    4. Edited to 5-10 minutes in length.

Food Restrictions continued

2. Recipe Modification

  1. Modify the recipe with a purpose (EX: your mom is diabetic so you are going to make a sugar free cake).
  2. Copy of the original recipe and your new recipe with at least 2 modifications
  3. Create Feedback forms
  4. Gather feedback forms from a group of at least 5 ppl who tested the modified and unmodified recipes

3. Host a Multicultural Dinner

  1. Must have recipes from at least 4 different cultures.
  2. Explain the cultural significance of the dishes.
  3. Create a feedback form for participants to complete (what what the favorite dish of the night, similarities, most surprising, what did you try that you never tried before).
  4. Include a reflection on similarities and differences.

The following items are STRONGLY discouraged

  • Projects that are expensive-- while you may have some minor costs (supplies, etc), you should not be spending lots of money to do this.

  • Projects related to health concerns without a doctor/trainer’s supervision-- if you start a diet (especially related to a sport), you need to make sure than an expert approves of it

How to get things started

  1. Brainstorm a list of things you might be interested in learning more about
    1. Concepts you have been introduced to in class
    2. Hobbies you already have
    3. Things that could benefit your family or community
    4. Skills you might want to develop
  2. Once you have brainstormed the list above, pick two or three of those things, and make lists of what you would do or make with that information.
  3. Pick from your brainstorming lists what you want to do, re-write the brainstorm as goals and enter them into ManageBac (see next slides for how)

How to get things started in ManageBac

  • Log into eastmeckib.managebac.com
  • Select IB Manager from left hand menu
  • Once in Manager Screen, select Personal Project button from top menu
  • On the “workspace screen” under the “GOALS” heading, select “edit goals”
  • Enter your Learning Goal and your Product Goal
  • DO NOT select a supervisor

Once you have your goals entered, you will be assigned a supervisor, you just have to give me a few days to get it figured out.

Once you have been assigned a supervisor

  • Introduce yourself (say “Hi” between classes, or send them an email)
    • If you are sending an email, make sure you include who you are and why you are emailing them.
  • Set up a meeting with your supervisor
    • It could be before school, during HR, during lunch, or after school.
    • It can be face to face or via zoom.
  • During your meeting- MAKE SURE YOU TAKE NOTES
    • Get feedback from your supervisor about your goals.
    • Edit your goals based on your meeting with your supervisor
    • Enter your notes into ManageBac under “Meetings with Supervisor” (first meeting)
