The Original Idea

Looking at the massive hunger problem that Honduras was enduring we decided to raise awareness using a method from our main organization Heifer.

The Fair Share Meal

The main idea of the Fair Share Meal was to bring a large group of different age groups together, give a presentation on the situation in Honduras, and then run a simulation of what it would be like if those people were in that situation.

Obstacles

At first this idea seemed fairly simple. However, as time went on we realized the kind of resources and planning an activity like this would take. None of us had the time to set something this large scale up within a community.

Scaling Down

As we realized more and more problems arising we decided to scale our project down and use only students at Folsom High School. Then we came across the problem of the age groups, without different age groups we would be unable to emulate all aspects of the struggle in Honduras.

New Idea

  • Our new idea was created after thinking about how we could reach out to the largest group
  • Then we thought since technology is so prominent in our generation we could do something with that
  • Since a large amount of people have smartphones we believed this would be the best way to raise awareness

Virtual Reality

Hence we decided we would go about spreading awareness by giving people the chance to see it through the eyes of a Honduran

What is Virtual Reality?

Virtual reality is the term used to describe a three-dimensional, computer generated environment which can be explored and interacted with by a person.

How We Went About It

  • At first we created a prototype from scratch
  • Then we figured out the different materials needed and how many would need to be made

15 of 29

Materials

  • Cardboard
  • Paper
  • Bi-Convex Lenses
  • Exacto Knife
  • Hot Glue
  • Glue Stick
  • Pencil
  • Velcro
  • Cutting Board
  • Packaging Tape

The Road to the Final Product

  • We faced many problems as they were trying to perfect the VR headset
  • Vance made 20 pairs of the virtual reality goggles

Furthering Our Project

  • Now that we had a structured idea, a finished product, and a plan we decided to meet with our local mentors Denise Martinez
  • She told us about Sue Bennett
  • Finally she informed us of the gardening kits she created

25 of 29

The Kits

  • There were kits for three different age levels: elementary school, middle school and high school
  • Each one consisted of a list of materials and how to plant the given seeds

Our Project’s Progress

April 2017: Secondly we received multiple gardening kits from our mentor which we used in our community to teach about the simplicity of gardening

April 2017: Lastly we held an outreach presentation at Sutter Middle School to teach the youth in our community about the struggles occurring in Honduras

September 2016 - March 2017: We used this time to create our final project idea and execute it i.e. the virtual reality headset

What Did We Learn?

Time Management

This project proved to be a big commitment for the three of us seeing as we all played sport and were involved in other extracurricular activities

The True Issue of Hunger

Throughout this project we did a large amount of research on how impactful hunger has been on countries like Honduras
