Computers are good, but your visual processing systems are even better! Here’s what to look for…

Background Issues

  • Water Splotches, or shiny blobs normally found near hair
  • Chaotic backdrops or odd looking companions
  • Irregular light sources or shadows

Glasses and Jewelry

  • Glasses frames are asymmetrical/non matching
  • Non matching jewelry such as necklaces and earrings

Teeth and Hair

Why is this important?

AI tools and models are usually not designed with education or student privacy in mind, therefore these tools and models may not be aligned with student privacy laws.

Key Considerations

Educate Staff & Students 👨‍🏫

  • Be transparent with your district about what AI tools are being used and why
  • Educate staff members about vetting AI tools
  • Create a plan for teachers to educate students

Vetting AI Tools ✅

  • Develop a plan for your district to vet AI (and other digital tools), such as COSN’s Vetting Flowchart
  • Allows for a streamlined approach to using AI tools

Understand Privacy Laws🔒

  • COPPA
  • FERPA

Are the AI tools being used compliant with student data privacy policies?

Do you know what data is being collected from these tools?

Is the data being collected ethically?

Key Considerations

Ethics ⚖️

  • AI is not always transparent
  • AI is not neutral
  • Misinformation

Privacy and Surveillance 🕵️

  • Many AI systems track information or actions for students and teachers
  • AI systems can then use this information to make predictions
  • In return, can limit participation, individual thoughts, and a sense of security

Plagiarism 📝

  • Plagiarism is an unethical use of content, yet people still do it (intentionally or unintentionally)
  • Banning them will not stop people from using them.
  • Instead, we need to embrace this new technology and think about how we can effectively use them to help ourselves or our students.

Possible Plagiarism Questions and Concerns

AI-Generated Text

🔍

How can I distinguish between AI generated text and original student work?

How do I discuss AI plagiarism with students?

Ethical Use

🤷‍♀️

How do I discuss ethical AI use with students?

How can students cite AI generated text?

Instructional Strategies 💡

How can I adjust my assignments or assessments to make it harder for students to use AI to cheat?

Thoughts & Next Steps

AI-Generated Text

🔍

AI detectors are not reliable & should not be used as primary decision making tool

Studies show high-false positive rates + may disproportionately impact non-native English speakers

Ethical Use

🤷‍♀️

Discuss & evaluate acceptable AI use with students.

Don’t assume the knowledge is there.

Instructional Strategies 💡

Focus on the process, not just the product

Be purposeful in lesson design — what skills are you really assessing?

Assume all students are using AI and adjust accordingly

AI Biases

AI has the potential to revolutionize education, but just like with any new technology, challenges and limitations must be addressed. AI systems learn to make decisions based on training data. This data can include biased human decisions or reflect historical or social inequities.
