Playing Time

NORTON HIGH SCHOOL BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL

15 of 29

Playing time Philosophy at the three levels

  • Freshmen level – all players will play at least some in the game, although time will most likely be limited for some depending on competitiveness of game
  • Junior varsity level-- all players will most likely play some in the game, however playing time will be limited for some depending on game situations
  • Varsity level– playing time is earned by performance at practices/prior games, there is no guarantee of playing time for all players due to the competitiveness of varsity competition

16 of 29

Purpose

  • This is a general idea on why coaches select players and how playing time is determined. The goal is to help parents understand the decision making process.

17 of 29

Priorities

  • Instill Hard Work in a competitive, challenging environment
  • Win / Create a Winning Environment
  • Help Individuals Reach Goals and help our team achieve Team Goals

18 of 29

II. Selection for Varsity

  • Skill Level
  • Fitness and Conditioning
  • Physical Strength
  • Mental Strength and Discipline

19 of 29

III. Playing Time

  • Playing time is determined by:
    • (first) Practice: player is performing and succeeding in practice consistently
    • (second) Game: player is performing and succeeding in games
    • (third) Coach’s: input from other coaches

20 of 29

III. Playing Time

  • Tier 1 Players: Starters [5 players]
    • These players consistently succeed in practice and during the game
  • Tier 2 Players: First Subs Off the Bench [3-5 players]
    • These players are doing very well in practice and games. Sometimes these players are good enough to start, but the starters are having more success on a consistent basis or it could simply be matchups
  • Tier 3 Players: Subs/ practice players [3-5 players]
    • These players have the skill to be on varsity, but occasional struggle in practice and/or games. We take these players to develop them to eventually hope they achieve varsity playing time, these players are critical for assisting with scout team prep and may often split time with the JV team to get more playing time if sophomores or juniors.

*Players can move up or down through the tiers throughout the whole season.

21 of 29

IV. When and Why Do Coaches Sub?

  1. Players are not performing in games and/or practices
  2. Players need a break (fitness and conditioning) or are injured
  3. Players get in foul trouble
  4. We have a comfortable lead
  5. We want to give the team a different look OR different match ups

22 of 29

VI. When Should You Ask about Playing Time?

  • When you don’t know your position on the team or what tier you are in terms of ability or skill/fitness/conditioning
  • When you want to know what to improve on to move up in tiers and receive more playing time
  • These conversations don’t guarantee more playing time rather inform student athletes how they can garner more playing time, sometimes other players are simply better, more skilled or in better fitness/conditioning shape
