Attendance
Evidence shows that pupils who have poor attendance and punctuality do not generally achieve well and have difficulties at secondary school.
At Sunnymede, we have been working hard to improve overall attendance. The Dfe continues to monitor our school to make sure this continues to improve and we need parents on board in committing to keeping their child’s attendance high (ideally over 97%).
Growth Mindset
We are continuing to develop a culture of ‘Growth Mindset’ within the school to support and encourage the children.
Each week, the children will vote for who they believe have shown a growth mindset and the winner will be awarded Neurone of the Week. The child will then have the chance to share how they have demonstrated a growth mindset outside of school. This book will be given out on Friday and should be returned the following week.
Year 5 Curriculum Overview
At the start of each term, there will be a year group newsletter which outlines what your children will learn.
A copy of this can be found on the school website on our year group page. On this overview you will find all of the topics we will be covering. We have started the year with science and forces.
It also contains dates and optional homework that could be completed.
National Curriculum
On the handout is extra information on the end of year expectations (these are also on the webpage).
Reading
Reading forms an integral part of our curriculum and those pupils who read daily at home make better progress. Good reading skills help children progress well. Reading daily with your child will enhance their progress greatly. Share some strategies for how they can work on vocabulary at home and get their children into the habit of asking themselves if they don’t understand the meaning of words they come across in a day to day conversation as well as when actually reading. Be a Vocabulary Ninja! It is an expectation that children read at home, and parents are expected to make comments on the app. https://go-read.co.uk/parents/ The instruction leaflet is on the class webpage.
Each week, your child can change their book and explore a range of texts with their adults. They are often heard reading aloud by a teacher or LSA The teacher will record on the app at least once a month.
Three times a week your child will work on answering written comprehension questions in our whole class reading sessions.
English
English lessons will occur daily as well as whole class reading sessions. There will also be handwriting, grammar and spelling sessions.
When there is evidence of joining, consistent style and correct letter formation they will be given a pen licence.
SPAG
Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
Children need to understand the difference between written and spoken language – especially living in Essex! ☺
Eg They were ….not ‘they was’
We did ….. not ‘we done’
Using the spelling word lists, try to encourage children to ask questions about the meaning of words and how they can be used.
In the handout, there is a glossary of grammar terms. These can also be found on the class webpage.
We will continue to test the children termly on the word lists.
MATHS
Please encourage your child to continue to practise their times tables (particularly instant recall). Your child can still use Times Tables Rockstars to help them.
Times tables should continue to be practised and children will be tested every Friday.
Every week, your child will need to complete a maths homework on Doodle. https://doodlelearning.com/maths-app
Passwords will be given out to complete their homework. Pupils are encouraged to complete this every week and can attend homework club on a Tuesday lunchtime.
There is also an opportunity to independently complete a daily 6/7, which is personalised learning. Following a baseline assessment, the program identifies gaps in the children’s learning.
HOMEWORK
Homework continues to be an important part of learning, with the majority of the homework set being linked to consolidate or enhance learning from class.
Homework is given out on a Friday and should be completed by the following Wednesday. They will have one piece linked to the curriculum as well as a Doodle task.
It is imperative that your child regularly completes and hands in homework. The homework policy can be found on the school website.
If your child completes all of their homework in a term, they will be entered into a raffle.
They can also attend homework club on a Tuesday lunchtime.
General information
P.E. – We will have indoor PE on a Tuesday and outdoor PE on Thursday for this half-term and Tuesday and Wednesday next half-term. The children should come to school dressed in their P.E. kits, which follow the uniform code (see next slide). Remember that tracksuit bottoms and leggings must be PLAIN navy or black and school blue shorts must be worn over leggings. Team football shorts are not part of the uniform!
Water bottles – We’re happy for the children to bring water bottles into the classroom and drink from them at appropriate times.
Children can buy a fresh fruit snack at school for 30p but if children bring in their own snack for morning break, it must be fresh fruit or vegetables only. No fruit winders etc. Only FRESH fruit or veg.
Uniform - please ensure all children follow the NEW uniform code on the next slide; letters will be sent home if uniform does not follow the school policy. Hair accessories should not be fancy and long hair should be tied back.
Communication
Home/school communication is extremely important and there are a variety of ways to communicate with staff:
1) You can send in a note with your child.
2) Make an appointment: If you need to speak to the teacher urgently or for a more personal issue, please make an appointment with the office staff.
3) End of the day: Teachers are available at the end of the day for brief appointments; however, you will need to wait until all pupils are discharged.
4) Friday drop ins: Every Friday, you are invited to come and have a look at your child’s work in the classroom 3.15pm - 3.40pm. An email will be sent out when this will start..
5) If you wish for your child to walk home, please complete the ‘End of day exiting arrangement’ form.
