How is my child being served?

Direct Instruction

Indirect Instruction

Students receive direct AIG services for 45 minutes each week in each identified subject area.

Direct service is defined as co-teaching, face-to-face classes, and asynchronous assignments or pre-recorded lessons.

The AIG teachers work with the classroom teachers to plan learning opportunities that occur during their time with their general education teacher.

AIG teachers do this through attending weekly grade level planning meetings to collaborate with classroom teachers.

Differentiated Education Plan

The DEP is a checklist showing how both the regular education teachers and the AIG teachers are meeting the needs of your AIG student.

DEPs were sent home the second week of school, along with your “Welcome back to AIG” letter.

Curriculum

AIG learning opportunities: �

  • are aligned with the grade level standards, skills, and content
  • extend the students’ understanding of reading, math and science concepts
  • spiraled 2 to 3 weeks behind standards covered in regular education classroom
  • project-based
  • multiple weeks long
  • foster higher level thinking
  • in-class, not homework
  • provide feedback and reflection, not grades�

When students are in their AIG session(s), general education teachers adjust instruction and activities so that students do not miss core instruction.

Enrichment Examples

ELA: �Students have just finished a unit on social justice with standards in analyzing nonfiction texts. They mastered the skill of using evidence to support their opinion in their classroom. In AIG, they practice reading with depth & complexity, with a focus on unanswered questions and perspective. Exploring the career of a news reporter, they extend the shared text on climate (Science connection) to pose questions that will make their viewers curious to learn more.

Math: �Students are 3 weeks into a unit on multiplicative comparisons. They mastered the skill of calculating such comparisons; in AIG they are challenged to create their own using an NC landmark (Social Studies connection). They research a landmark of their choosing using books from the media center and online resources, then determine three objects that would be suitable for comparison. A concept that may have seemed simple in the regular education classroom suddenly becomes more dynamic!

encourage curiosity, problem solving, academic risk-taking, less emphasis on avoiding � mistakes, read read read, find ways to connect math to real life, get to know (& respect)� your child’s learning style
