Purpose
The Ash Fork Middle School canoe trip was a four-day canoe trip that gave many of our rural students their first experience with outdoor recreation and camping. The Ash Fork Middle School canoe trip started in 2016 with the idea of reinforcing the team building and leadership skills learned throughout the year combined with the end-of-year 8th-grade trip celebrating the next step in our student's academic careers.
This year's canoe trip was very successful. With no access to the outside world, students refined their teamwork while learning how to paddle a canoe together, formed deeper friendships, learned the value of empathy, and gained a better appreciation of the outdoors.
Additionally, students bonded in activities that pushed their comfort zones like cliff jumping, climbing, and swimming. They proudly shared their school's excellence to visitors passing through the hot springs and represented their school and community positively. Furthermore, students took on leadership roles during hikes, built bridges with their new high school peers, and left empowered to take on the unique challenges of high school.
