Kaya Scodelario was born in London, England, to Roger Humphrey & Katia Scodelario, parents. Kaya's parents divorced when she was younger and she was raised entirely by her mom, who was born in Brazil. This ensured that Kaya grew up speaking fluent English and Brazilian Portuguese. Kaya decided to become an actress at the age of fourteen.

Kaya also had to cope with dyslexia as a child, something she described in a 2010 tweet as having "really affected my self-esteem," and that she has struggled with for a long time.

Kaya made her acting debut with the well known British teenage drama series Skins. She had no acting experience prior to auditioning for the role, but was selected to be one of the most popular characters in the series. By season 3, she had been the sole original cast member to stay on the show and remained till the conclusion of season four.

During the show's hiatus, Kaya found time to make a few films and made her feature film debut as Sam Rockwell's daughter, Eve, in the space drama Moon (2009). Additionally she had a small role in the mythical action film Clash of the Titans (2010) and also took the role of Cathy in the classic British drama Wuthering Heights (2011).

Kaya functioned as a model simultaneously - showing up in magazines and music videos - such as a video for Brit - based singer Robbie Williams' song Candy. She played The title character in her first major role alongside Jessica Biel in The 2013 film the Truth About Emanuel.

Kaya's very first major action film was the maze Runner, where she played Teresa, the one female in a group of teenagers trapped in a deadly Maze. In the sequels of the film, she reprised her character: The Maze Runner: The Maze Runner and the Scorch Trials (2015): The Death Cure(2018).

She continued to play Carina in the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), with Brenton Thwaites, Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp.

In the Spinning Out TV series from 2019, Kaya played a figure skater called Kat who is joined by a "Bad boy" skater. Additionally, she played Ted Bundy's wife Carole Anne Boone in the biopic Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil & Vile (2019), which had a brief run in theaters prior to launching on Netflix in May 2019. She has also appeared in the horror film Crawl (2019).

In December 2015, Kaya married her actor Benjamin Walker. They are together; they have a son.
