WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR TIDES ADVOCACY?

As the Nation’s first pro-Black fiscal sponsor, we are committed to operating from a place of love by centering the needs of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color-led advocacy and political organizations transforming policies and systems at the grassroots level while also building an infrastructure uniquely purposed to sustain them. We are leveraging our legal, advising, and compliance expertise to shield movement leaders and strengthen movement infrastructure to mitigate any challenges that reinforce overt and covert anti-Blackness –allowing the heart and spirit of visionary leaders to remain at the forefront of impact and change.

WHO WE ARE

WHO ARE TIDES ADVOCACY’S PARTNERS, AND WHAT DO THEY DO?

Tides Advocacy serves as a fiscal sponsor to over ninety social welfare projects and funds of all sizes across the United States. Our partners represent diverse local and national networks and issue areas. Collectively, they work with and on behalf of communities most impacted by injustice to align political strategies and investments for policy wins and lasting social change. For more information on Tides Advocacy partners, please visit our website.

WHO IS TIDES ADVOCACY?

Tides Advocacy is a racial and social justice organization focused on building independent power for Black, Indigenous, and people of color through advocacy work and a drive toward collective liberation.

Tides Advocacy is the advocacy and political arm and the 501(c)(4) affiliate of Tides.

WHY NOW?

It is not enough to just be anti-racist. We must be pro-Black. We made a commitment in 2020 to work toward becoming a pro-Black organization. After three years of building infrastructure and providing essential support to organizations working for justice, we are now ready to elevate the Power of Us Fund to the next level. Our work is far from done, but we believe these actions are crucial to achieving Black liberation and creating a more inclusive democracy for us all.

WHO WE ARE

WHAT VALUES GUIDE TIDES ADVOCACY’S WORK AS A PRO-BLACK FISCAL SPONSOR?

  • JOY through practicing celebratory love in the community with a hopeful and liberating imagination.
  • EQUITY by working to dismantle white supremacist practices as individuals and as an organization while mobilizing resources for BIPOC movement leaders.
  • INTEGRITY by operating honestly, lovingly, and communicating openly while admitting our mistakes and making things right.
  • SUSTAINABILITY to meet this moment's urgency to ensure our core values of fostering a healthy and thriving space, adaptability, and shared prosperity.
  • SOLIDARITY to ensure that our core value of harnessing our collective wisdom is to build and strengthen community and political power.

WHAT IS THE

POWER OF US FUND?

The Power of Us Fund is how Tides Advocacy actualizes our love letter beyond words.

We believe in the liberatory imagination of progressive Black, Indigenous, and people of color-led advocacy organizations that challenge and replace oppressive and white supremacist structures.

We are committed to affirming the Power of Us by mobilizing advocacy resources to focus on rest, resilience, and resistance.

Collectively, we can make a real difference by amplifying the Power of Us.

ABOUT THE

CAMPAIGN

A LOVE LETTER TO BLACK PEOPLE

Kicking off during Black History Month, A Love Letter to Black People is a pro-Black campaign driven by Tides Advocacy to honor those who center the humanity, autonomy, and restoration of Black lives every day.

We seek to:

  • Amplify awareness to highlight the importance of Black-led advocacy and organizing.
  • Narrative shift for culture change and a clear understanding of what it means to be pro-Black.
  • Stand in solidarity with the black community who continues to survive, transform, and rejoice in the face of adversity.

Tides Advocacy unapologetically celebrates the power of the Black community. Uplifting the joy and love we have for our people, we are pushing philanthropy to take a deeper look at how they give and show them that they can affirm the Power of Us by increasing their giving to Black, Indigenous, and people of color communities.

WHAT DOES

PRO-BLACK MEAN?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE PRO-BLACK?

Being pro-Black means uplifting, supporting, and centering the dignity, humanity, autonomy, and restoration of Black lives, which is essential to our collective liberation.

HOW DOES BEING PRO-BLACK DIFFER FROM BEING ANTI-WHITE?

Being pro-Black is not the same as being anti-white. It is about love for advancing equality and the rights/policies that protect Black lives, not opposing or being against any other race.

9 of 21

WHO IS

PRO-BLACK FOR?

IS BEING PRO-BLACK ONLY FOR BLACK PEOPLE?

No, anyone can be pro-Black and support the Black community. Allies must use their privilege to help uplift and advocate for the Black community.

WHAT ARE SOME SPECIFIC ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT BEING PRO-BLACK?

First, it is important to actively seek out and listen to the perspectives and experiences of Black lives. Allies can support Black-led power building by amplifying Black voices and educating themselves on the spectrum of identities and issues facing the Black community. Philanthropy is reparations. Allies can also invest in Black-led advocacy organizations’ initiatives.
