October 2023

Discussion

  • A fire in the attic presents a series of unique challenges for a fire department
  • Initial concerns for responding companies:
    • Is the fire through the roof?
    • Is it impinging on lightweight construction?
    • Where was the origin of the fire?
    • How does the company access the fire?
    • Is the access large enough for us to get through with gear and equipment?
    • How do we know its just an attic fire?
    • What’s the ventilation tactic? – Horizontal or Vertical?
    • When do we use the fan or do we even use it?
    • What’s the fuel load? – When all know people use attic space for storage

      • What tasks are going to need to be performed?
    • Where does the first line go?
      • Second line?
    • Where and how does the truck company ventilate?
    • How do you determine if the room is safe to operate and under?
    • What is the risk assessment used here?
