Unit 8 Lesson 6
Classification of Organisms
Overview
We classify biotic (living) organisms into 6 kingdoms.
Organizing Criteria
Single Cell- has only one cell.
Multicellular- made of more than one cell.
Heterotroph- consumes its food.
Autotroph-produces its own food.
Prokaryotic- cells have no nucleus.
Eukaryotic- cells have a nucleus.
Kingdom Animalia is composed of multicellular organisms that are heterotrophs made of eukaryotic cells.
2. Plantae
Kingdom Plantae is composed of multicellular organisms that are autotrophs made of eukaryotic cells.
Pit Stop
What is the difference between kingdom animalia and plantae?
3. Fungi
Kingdom fungi is composed of multicellular organisms that are heterotrophs made of prokaryotic cells.
Pit Stop
What is the difference between kingdom plantae and fungi?
4. Archaebacteria
Kingdom Archaebacteria is composed of unicellular organisms that are made of prokaryotic cells. Some are heterotrophs and some are autotrophs.
*They are found in extreme conditions.
5. Eubacteria
Kingdom Eubacteria is composed of unicellular organisms that are autotrophs and heterotrophs made of prokaryotic cells.
*They are found everywhere. Some are helpful to humans, some are not.
Pit Stop
What is the difference between kingdom archaebacteria and eubacteria?
6. Protista
Kingdom protista is composed of multicellular and unicellular organisms that are heterotrophs and autotrophs made of prokaryotic cells.
