Governance in a globalised world

Official meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Minister, Socialist Republic of Vietnam (closed)

Great leaders have immense courage. But what does courage actually look like? Delegates will hear from Huong Dang and her own personal story fueled by courage and leadership. Delegates will also explore what courage is, how it is needed to confront their own challenges and the need for humility to further develop their own leadership capacity.

The consequences of ignoring risks and weak corporate governance can be costly to organisations. In the context of a dynamic yet turbulent business environment, delegates will have the opportunity to explore "what good governance looks like".

They will also look at "how organisations are able to find a balance between performing to a high standard while maintaining good governance" and how they can personally take the lead in developing more inclusive, accountable and public-spirited organisations. These are some of the themes to be addressed by panellists and delegates.

Educating for the future

This session will explore where Australia and Vietnam are at in terms of educating for the needs of the 21st century. At the same time it will consider the role of education in the context of the persistent inequalities that exist in both countries. What will be required in our education policies and in our curricula that will create quality and inclusive education that can address these needs? How do technologies assist with these ambitious goals? Are technologies an answer or is it also about continuous learning and re-inventing? Questions will also be directed at delegates exploring their interpretation of learning and discussing their own learning experiences.

The continual pattern of inequality (whether it be gender, class, socio-economic, location etc.) is a constraint to the progress of both Australia and Vietnam - how do we break this pattern so that we unleash the great potential and opportunities across all sectors? The discussion will then focus on a number of inequalities, specifically looking at gender justice, where panellists and delegates will consider the challenges and opportunities to address existing barriers faced by girls, women and minorities in both countries.

10:30 - 12:00pm

Environmental sustainability

Climate change is now affecting every country on every continent. It is disrupting national economies and affecting lives, costing people, communities and countries. As demand increases for already constrained natural resources, there are great concerns for irreversible damage to our environment.

Delegates will explore the issues associated with climate change and how we can change our consumption and production patterns. Experienced practitioners working to achieve sustainability across the food chain, energy and circular economy industries will share their experiences and challenge delegates to implementing sustainable consumption and production practices in the communities and sectors they are working in.

Vietnam 2030: Identity, aspirations and challenges

What have been the main policy drivers that has fuelled Vietnam’s miracle growth in the last 30 years? Would these strategies continue to work to maintain Vietnam's development momentum over the next 10 years? Particularly in the context of technological disruption, Vietnam is and will confront deepening inequality and increasing environmental pressure.

What are the main challenges confronting Vietnam to reach its full potential and ensure prosperity for all? How can Vietnam address these challenges? What role does the bilateral relationship play in Vietnam’s continued development journey?

Delegates have the opportunity to present their SDG projects to their delegate cohort.

For the past two decades Australia has enjoyed strong economic growth, mainly driven by global demand for its abundant natural resources, high standards of living, high-quality food and health services. It is unlikely that Australia will continue to rely solely on the resources sector to drive its economic growth, but innovation is the key driver for Australia’s future prosperity. It is difficult to predict the future, but this session aims to explore what will likely be the main drivers, opportunities and challenges for Australia towards 2030.

Delegate Charter (Closed session - Delegates only)

Delegates are facilitated to develop a joint charter expressing the group values which they will commit to professionally and personally, especially in light of their reflections from each day; and your country vision for 2030 and the five selected SDGs.
