Advisory (Homeroom)-18 minutes
YOU ARE ONLY IN ADVISORY (HOMEROOM) 18 MINUTES PER DAY.
Advisory will happen each day.
On Monday you will email your adults and your Advisory teacher your current grades. This is so at grade check time there are no surprises.
Tuesday-Friday there are different activities related to getting ready for a future career or social-emotional lessons.
Recess and Lunch
5th Graders will have 18 minutes of Advisory time, then go to recess (we are in the gym during winter and outside during the fall and spring) then lunch. Students are walked to recess and lunch. We only have 5th graders at recess.
WIN-You will be with different teachers/students throughout the week.
During this time, lots of different activities are going on including: band lessons, gifted and talented classes, reading and math interventions, enrichments and you can be drafted by a teacher if you need extra help.
Extra Help during WIN (AKA Drafting)
If something is really hard, teachers can draft you to help with that. You can ask to be drafted. If you are in math or reading intervention, you will be drafted only on days you don’t have intervention.
Mr. Dahl, Dean of Students
Mr. Dahl can help with attendance, 504s and he will be the person you will most likely see if you are sent to the office.

5th GR Rule Breaks
5th Grade teachers track the number of rule breaks and students with fewer than X rules breaks since the last reward, are able to do something fun during that time.
Hats are OK ONLY during Outdoor, NOT Indoor Recess
Hats need to be in your locker, not in classrooms at all other times (Including Advisory). Students will be sent to the office for refusing to remove their hats.
What happens if I am wearing a hat when I shouldn’t be?
Footballs during Recess
Footballs are OK when we have outdoor recess. When we have indoor recess, the footballs must be the foam nerf type. You can compress these so that they are 2 inches thick. If you can’t compress it that much, it is not acceptable in the gym. Padded balls filled with air are also not acceptable. You can also borrow school nerf footballs.
Brain Drain and Cell Phones
In a recent study, students completely turned off and silenced their phones. While they performed memory tasks, some were allowed to keep their phone, and some were told to put it in the other room. Those who had the phone with them did significantly worse. The mere presence of smartphones reduces available cognitive capacity. In other words, the attention and energy it takes to not check a phone causes “brain drain.”
Stop Brain Drain
Backpacks, Phones, Smartwatches should be in your locker and not carried with you.
If a family member needs to reach you during the day, there are 2 options
NLS MS Cell Phone/Smartwatch Expectations
Students are expected to keep cell phones off and put away in their lockers from 8:15 to 3:05.
Leaving class for any reason? Sign out using the ehall pass.
Tardies-AKA Being Late
Tardies are tracked in IC. Students are expected to be in their seats, ready to work, at the start of each class. If they are not, they will be marked late. Students who are tardy to class face the following consequences: detention with the teacher, loss of participation points, or parent conferences. Three unexcused tardies are equivalent to one unexcused absence and apply to the complete absence rule. If a student misses more than 10 minutes of class, it will be considered an absence.
6 Tardies=After School Detention on Tuesdays. You will miss any activities scheduled during that time.
