Guests: Ranger Kina
War in the Pacific NHP, Guam
Sam’s Daily Reflection
Today was our third day! We started the day off with a delicious breakfast of smoothies, malasadas, spam musubi, and pancakes that I accidentally kept on calling waffles for some reason lol. Along with that, we had some Kale candy canes and Clamdy Canes!! Anyways, after that we played speed ball and had a time of 53 seconds. We also read a writing from Valerie King about the word Gef Pa’go which is the word for beauty. When translated literally, Gef pa’go means to be very today, very now, or as Ms. Valerie said, “very present.” We got to hear her story of how sometimes waiting to do something is good because it gives your brain time to be creative and prepare. After that, started on our journey to War in The Pacific NHP. We had the honor of getting to learn from Ranger Kina. One of my favorite things she taught us was the meaning behind every in the Guam flag. We also got to learn about the secret behind the guns in the middle of the forest. It was very interesting to learn about Guam and the people. It’s truly awful how people from places like Guam are treated by the US even to this day. I hope that US will treat Guam better in the future. Following our visit to War in the Pacific NHP, we had a very interesting p4c about, “why people pretend to be someone they’re not?” I really enjoyed it, and can’t wait till tomorrow! Thank you to everyone who made today possible!!
Today, Ranger Kina came over again and talked about Guam and its history. This time, i learned what Guam’s flag meant. The red outline of the flag is the bloody battles and the blue part represents the sea. Then we learned that people saved other’s bones to worship them. I learned a lot today!
My Daily Reflection:
In the morning, we “met” with a student that studies philosophy in Guam named Valerie King. She wrote about Gefpa’go, which she taught us, means, beautiful. But then she talks about when the word is broken down, “Gef” means “very”, and “pa’go” means “now” so Gefpa’go translates to very now, or very present, and I thought it was really cool how when the word is broken down, it actually can mean something different.
After our lunch break, Ranger Kina spoke to us about Chamorro people and she told us the secret of the Piti Guns! She also taught us about the invasive species, the brown tree snake.
Reflection - Yuna
It was really interesting to learn about the different meaning behind the design choices of the flag of Guam like the importance of blood and blood spilled as well as a deep connection to the ocean. It was also interesting that they worshipped their ancestors and they kept specific parts of their body depending on what their role in society was. Something else was that was interesting was the fact that there were stationary guns that could shoot something from 7 miles away.
Day 3 reflection
Daily Reflection
Paige
Today is day 3 of VRT and this morning we went back to Gef Pa'go, CHamorro Culture Village and Uncle Toby read about Gef Pa’go which was written by Valerie King and she talks about how Gef Pa’go literally means very present and she thinks of it as a way of the CHamorro people were onto something, she also explains that people say that doing nothing is bad and that’s the devil’s playground but she thinks of it rather as a secret garden to imaginative thinking. She also thinks of it as a way for that project or thing that you’re doing can marinate in the back of your head and wait for really good ideas to pop up. After that, we decided to do some scrapbooking. Then we had lunch and went to visit Ranger Kina for part 2 and we learned about some of the events in Guam that were taken place at about the same time as some important events that happened in around the world. We learned about the secret behind the piti guns, Ranger Kina said that the secret was that the Japanese never used them to attack the U.S. troops and it might have been because of the CHamorro people and they might have spared many lives. Another thing I learned was that the CHamorro people were from Indonesia and some CHamorros lived in caves, I also thought the origin of Guam’s flag was really interesting. I learned so much today and thank you Ranger Kina for coming and teaching us about the CHamorro people. Thank you to everybody!
Thank you Ranger Kina and Uncle Toby for another Great Day
Today was our second visit with Ranger Kina from War in the Pacific National Historical Park in Guam. This time Ranger Kina taught us about the history of Guam and about CHamorro culture. On the way to War in the Pacific, we (virtually) met with Valerie King, a p4c student in Guam. She was explaining how the CHamorro word “Gef Pa’go” means beauty. Ms. King explains that the word “Gef pa’go” is comprised of the words “very” and “now”. So the word “Gef pa’go”literally translates to “very now”.
