Mathematics is a fundamental part of human thought and logic, and integral to attempts at understanding the world and ourselves. Mathematics provides an effective way of building mental discipline and encourages logical reasoning and mental rigor.
In addition, mathematical knowledge plays a crucial role in understanding the contents of other school subjects such as science, social studies, and even music and art.

MATH IN OUR DAILY LIFE
Comparison
Students can compare the cost of brands, size, quality, and price of items using numbers or words,
Estimation
Students can estimate the weight of products or how many bags are needed to hold items.
Addition/Subtraction
Students can round, estimate, and add the cost of items. They can also subtract the total from the budget.
Counting
Students can track the number of items on the grocery list to ensure every item is purchased.
The grocery store is one of the best places to find math. You can even apply some of these ideas to other retail stores.

Effective time management requires 3 steps.
TIME MANAGEMENT
Ask students to make a timetable for their daily activities, allocating time for hobbies, responsibilities, academics, and sports.
Older students are capable of creating schedules specifically for their projects at school or managing homework in multiple subjects.
EXAMPLES
MONEY
Using online manipulatives are a great substitution for real money!
Older students can figure out how much certain items would cost if they used a coupon or if the item is on sale. If there are multiple coupons, have students determine which will provide a better value.
Give coins and cash to your student along with a flyer to a store of your choice. Have students pretend to buy items from the flyer with the money you provided.
Students can also compare their previous accomplishments to their current abilities.
SPORTS
Students can practice exercises like skipping, push-ups, or curl-ups, and keep track of their accomplishments.
Math helps keep track of scores for almost every sport. Students can count goals, runs, or other statistics to better understand how the sport is played.
Older students can use geometry and trigonometry to learn how to make baskets easier, hit a ball accurately, or the fastest way to run around the track.
We can use games to practice our math skills.
Math shows up in many aspects of cooking and baking, including converting temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit (and vice versa), changing the quantities of ingredients provided by a recipe, and working out cooking times based on weight.
COOKING
Reading
Students can count or estimate how many words can be read in a minute or how long it takes to read a chapter.
History
Students can create a timeline for historical events or even personal life events.
STEM
NASA offers online interactive STEM activities for all grade levels.
Music
Students can find patterns in rhymes, chants, and even games of pat-a-cake.
Math is necessary to the operation and progression of much that we hold dear as a society.
OTHER ACADEMIC SUBJECTS
MATH IN NATURE
Patterns can be found throughout nature.
Patterns also include symmetry. Try using a mirror to help determine if a pattern is symmetrical.
FIBONACCI SEQUENCE
Fibonacci (real name Leonardo Bonacci) was a mathematician who developed the Fibonacci Sequence. The sequence is found by adding the previous two numbers of the sequence together. It looks like this: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34… And on it goes.
SHAPES
In addition to shapes, students can identify 2D and 3D figures
Weight
How much does a rock weigh? How many leaves are need to weigh one grams?
Planting/Gardens
Create a garden with your students. Have them design a layout to plant flowers, fruits, or vegetables.
Natural Distance
Have students measure the distance between trees and estimate the size of the roots underground.
Angles
Have students use a level to determine if an object level and if it is not estimate the angle it is.
Measurement is important because it helps us to quantify the world around us.
