What is Science?

  • Process of learning about the natural world through observation and experimentation

  • Science is based on observations measurements and patterns found in nature, the body and the universe.

6 of 28

Science Involves:

  • Trying to explain how things work.
  • People working together to explain events.
  • Exploring and investigating the world.

7 of 28

A Scientist:

  • Searches for clues
  • Makes careful observations
  • Measures and records
  • Conducts experiments
  • Communicates with others

The Branches of Science

  • Physics – studies forces, energy and how

things move.

  • Biology – studies living things.
  • Chemistry – studies chemical reactions
  • Geology – studies the Earth
  • Astronomy – studies the planets, stars and

the universe

  • Ecology – studies how living things affect

each other.

Scientific Drawing

  • In Science clear accurate diagrams of pieces of equipment are needed.
  • These are some guidelines to remember:
    1. Always draw in pencil
    2. Straight lines are always drawn using a ruler
    3. Each item must be labelled
    4. Diagrams are drawn in two dimensions
    5. Draw diagrams large (¼ to ½ page each)
