Introduction of Lesson: | Wonder Writing Read Houdini text (see link below) Work in groups of 2/3 to work through questions on the sheet. | | |
Writing time and prompts | Ideas: Give a number of habitats and creatures. Get children to write a “goldilocks and the three bears/ three little pigs” story about the creature finding its habitat. OR: Myth/legend narrative about why a creature lives in it’s habitat. Lesson Plan: Read this to the children as the hook into writing for the week. | Use the questions on the sheet to brainstorm/ research AS A CLASS. Design a tank for the octopus AS A CLASS. How would we design the tank to form the best artificial habitat for the octopus? Research Octopus: habitat, behaviour, features, adaptations etc - put information under the headings around the classroom (habitat, diet, behaviours/movement, special features)- 20 minutes Write these ideas up into an information report - Title (Common, Scientific & Māori name) subheadings are: habitat, diet, behaviour/how they move and special features (with a labelled diagram). Writing time and prompts | Bring up the image of the food web. Get the children to share their ideas about what the food web shows (revision from inquiry learning last week). Children to discuss with a partner 1 food chain they can see from the food web. Share with the class.
Children to choose 1 food chain from the food web and write it into the boxes on their planning and writing doc. | Children to have 10 minutes to plan for their writing (characters, setting, problem, solution). Give children 20-30 minutes silent writing time to begin their writing, thinking about using a range of vocabulary. Continue writing time on Wednesday after sharing some work so far. Thursday: Peer editing using the rubric. |

Writing time and prompts | Dangerous writing - hook children in (5 minute writing challenge). Blog writing challenge. Tuesday: Discuss cross country. What did you enjoy/not enjoy? Discuss how a recount does not always have to be about a positive experience. Discuss some language you could use to describe some of your experiences in an interesting way. Share these back with the class. | 20-30 minutes of silent writing. Come back and share/critique some writing with the class. Wednesday: More time for writing. Re introduce WALTs. Thursday: Proof reading Friday: sharing writing on blog with photos/ pictures. |
