What is a memoir?

Autobiographical

Nonfiction. It is in the form a a narrative. It assumes a reflective tone and includes events from one’s life

It may be focussed on just one memory of the writer. Shorter than a biography and has the elements of a narrative.

A diary is a book to record events as they happen.

A journal is a book used to explore ideas that take shape.

They may be in the form of a letter to the diary or to oneself. The diary may be given a name (like Kitty).

A diary can be a place to hide private thoughts, or a record of personal memories, or just a way of organizing a day. We can learn a lot about people in the past by reading their diaries.

What is a diary entry?

journal

It is avery personal form of communication, mostly written to and for oneself. The conventions of diary writing are informal since it is not meant for a public audience. It is often in the form of a letter and entries are made daily.

It is informal and shows the personality of the writer. They maybe very long or very short.

Elements of a diary entry

Day, Date and Time of the entry.

A suitable descriptive heading of the entry you are putting on.

The detailed comprehensive body of the diary entry (i.e. contents).

A Diary should be written in the First Person and not in the second or third, i.e. - I went to the port (not he went to the city).

A Diary doesn't need to be formal it can be written in an Informal style.

Signature of the writer to give it much need authenticity.
