T: Let’s look at both the “Light in Film” student worksheet and Color in Film student worksheet. Individually, answer the questions on both related to the images shown. You have two minutes to complete both and Choose one emotion for each image.Go.

T: Now that you are done, let’s look and share a few answers First image, give me an emotion…second image, give me an emotion…

T: The use of your lighting equipment, the background for your interview subject, even what they wear, will be important to think through ahead of your interviews.

T: Communicating well, actively listening and working with others on your team and conveying what you need from your interview subjects, is the practice of those all important relationship skills. Those will be important to the success of setting the right mood as you prepare for your film and as you film.

T: Ok, one last thing about mood for you to consider. Let’s watch a bit of this clip from JAWS, a Steven Spielberg masterpiece.

{Play the clip with NO SOUND).

T: What kind of mood did this clip evoke? [take answers] Let’s try it a different way and see if that changes anything.

[Now play the clip with the SOUND ON]

[Ask what students felt with music added. What type of music did Spielberg choose for this movie - suspenseful, evokes building up to something that will happen, orchestra, no lyrics, etc - Have students give any other examples of current films that would be significantly worse without music.]

T: You can see that music plays a big role in setting the mood in a film (plus the quality of the audio overall, right?) You will get to choose your own music for your film during editing.
