Essential Question #1 - What are the special qualities that make clay sculptural and functional?

The quality that makes clay sculptural is the soft and moistness so you can shape it, and it become functional after being baked because you can use it as a pot, mug, etc.

Essential Question #2 - What knowledge and basic actions does one need to make a successful piece with clay?

To make a successful piece of clay, one would need to know how to mold/sculpt clay, slip and score, and attach pieces to add depth and design.

Essential Question #3 - How is the kiln involved with pottery production, and how does the clay change after being fired?

The kiln is used to “bake” the clay, and after being fired the clay is hardened and the color turns to white.

Essential Question #4 - How do artists and designers document the development of their artistic process and why?

Artists and designers document the development of their artistic process by writing or taking photographs, and this is done so other people and themselves can see the different stages of the work and learn from it.

My theme and main idea

The theme of my coil pottery structure was that life has many ups and downs.

I conveyed this by using a coil continuously going up and down to represent the different directions in life.

I also used spirals to show how it might feel like you’re going in circles at some points in your life.

The function of my piece

My coil pot will have a function, which will be to hold pencils, pens, markers, and other writing utensils.

It will be stored on my desk in my room.
