What is Live@Expo?

Guided Tours, reimagined for the digital world, controlled by YOU!

Live@Expo embodies Expo 2020 Dubai’s theme of “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.” Hovercast’s proprietary interactive platform brings a global audience to the Expo site through a livestream hosted by an onsite Guide. This Guide moves across the Expo, broadcasting their adventures to a live audience using a small camera and backpack-based streaming hardware. The audience communicates directly with the Guide by typing comments into a chat window, creating a feedback loop that leads to exciting quests, captivating interviews, and access to the global community of Expo participants.

Live@Expo kicked off October 1, 2021. There will be four streams a week through March 31, 2022, and a total of 100 live broadcasts streamed to Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Twitch and the VirtualExpoDubai.com platforms.

Innovation & Creativity

Live@Expo is a first-of-its-kind, live interactive series that engages audiences around a real-life destination. Utilizing Hovercast’s proprietary technology, the tour guide’s camera feed is paired with graphics soliciting engagement from the audience. As viewers participate, their comments and actions are fed back to the guide, creating a rich back-and-forth dialogue between the guide and the global community exploring Expo 2020 Dubai together.

All of this is supported by a storytelling team that ensures all the nuance of the 40M-square foot Expo site stays in the spotlight. Our guides are visiting hundreds of pavilions, educating an audience in the millions about global culture, tasting food from top chefs, and experiencing the site’s many events. The writing team ensures that our Guides showcase all the details that make the site special, from calligraphy style benches to roving puppets, parades, and performances.

Live@Expo Stats:

  • Viewership: Live@Expo has received over 73 million impressions and 7 million views. With over 40 episodes to go, we expect this number to double.
  • Engagement: Viewers have interacted over a million times through likes, poll votes, comments, and shares.
  • Seeds of Change: Audience members have earned over 11,000 points which will be converted to real-money donations to carbon neutral initiatives.
  • Leaderboard: Thousands of unique viewers are vying their way to the top of our leaderboard

  • Audience members vote to direct the Guide’s actions or participate to unlock new challenges.
  • Constructive participation such as answering trivia and suggesting interview questions earns points for individual viewers, helping them climb the leaderboard.
  • The aggregated points per episode are converted into Seeds of Change. Viewers then vote for the causes to which Expo will be making donations.
  • The audience collectively earns badges when they’ve accomplished goals.
  • Live@Expo shows are consistently high performing videos on Expo’s Facebook page (2.5 million followers).

EXPO 2020: Highlights So Far

Expo includes 217 pavilions, a multitude of food and beverage options from around the world and a daily slate of world-class performances. The site itself is our “star,” supported by our four charismatic Guides.

So far some of our favorite moments include an onscreen proposal, dancing with Riverdance, shooting hoops with the Harlem Globetrotters, and speaking with Astronaut Naoko Yamazaki. With big names rumored for the days ahead, we’re expecting the last few months of programming to continue our streak.
