The Culper Spy Ring

  • Washington needs intelligencehow many British soldiers? What are their plans? Where are they going?
    • Washington empowers young cavalry officer Benjamin Tallmadge to create a network to relay information from British-controlled New York to Washington and the Continental Army.
      • Tallmadge recruited men he trusted, including childhood friends Abraham Woodhull and Caleb Brewster.
        • His neighbor, Anna Strong, signaled new info had arrived by hanging specific clothes (black petticoat) outside to dry.
      • They devised codes to pass messages – numbers stood for words so the messages could never be decoded!

    • Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and John Jay negotiated the peace treaty. England recognized USan independence and ceded most of its territory east of the Mississippi River to the United States, doubling the size of the new nation and paving the way for westward expansion and further Indian removal.

YANKEE DOODLE (SPIRIT OF ‘76)

28 of 28

Yankee Doodle

Yankee Doodle went to town,

Riding on a pony.

Stuck a feather in his cap…

And called it Macaroni

Yankee Doodle keep it up,

Yankee Doodle dandy,

Mind the music and the step

And with the girls be handy!

First sung by British to tease “hayseed” colonists, Yankee Doodle became an American anthem, a song of pride.
