Using an AED is as easy as turning it on (and listening to the instructions it gives) and looking at the pads (which indicate where to put them on the victim). Familiarize yourself with the location of the AED(s) in your building and nearest to your workspace.
- Turn on the AED. Open the case and follow the voice prompts.
- Attach the pads. Expose the person's bare chest. Place one pad on the upper right side of the chest, and the other on the lower left side, below the armpit.
- Allow the AED to analyze. Ensure no one touches the person while the AED analyzes their heart rhythm.
- Deliver a shock if advised. If the AED determines a shock is needed, it will tell you to "stand clear" and press a button to deliver the shock. Make sure everyone is clear before pressing the button.
- Continue CPR. After the shock (or if no shock is advised), continue Hands-Only CPR until emergency medical services arrive or the person shows signs of recovery.
