I am going to discuss how idents work, design, the purposes, limitations and opportunities of idents. My sweet of idents is ITV

What is an Ident

  • An Ident is a short clip played before each TV show. They are normally used to brand a channel so it shows who the audience what TV channel they’re watching. It informs the audience of the channels tone and attitude, they will sometimes use different idents depending on the upcoming show that will be shown, E.G A documentary that is being show next, they may use an ident that is relevant to the show.

Purpose of Idents

The main purpose of idents is to attract the audience and to lure them in to watch the next show after the ident, but they’re many reasons why channels use idents, such as just telling the audience what they will be watching next, this is the biggest reason for using idents on TV. The second reason they may use idents on channels is because on certain channels that don’t use advertisements such as BBC, idents

Opportunities of Idents

  • What can an ident give opportunities to a channel
  • An ident can give many opportunities to a channel such as attracting more viewers and making the channel more appealing to the viewers, a good ident can give the channel popularity and it can build the channel up and make it a word-wide name. An ident depending on the channel can bring in more viewers from different backgrounds and different genders because an ident can appeal to any audience, it can be funny or serious or it can involve a character that many people know, E.G cartoon character, that a child or teenager can relate too.
  • Also, the opportunity of an ident is to make sure the cast and crew have breaks in between the broadcasting of the shows on channels such as BBC 1,2 and 3 because they don’t have adverts so Idents are the only sort of break they have in-between shows.

Design of idents

  • Why is design important
  • Design of idents is unbelievably important because the design determines if the ident will look good enough to be on television, the design is important because it pulls the audience in to watch that certain channel, without a good design the channel will not have an audience because they design elements of the ident will not look impressive. Colour is important in an ident because colour can suggest a lot about the channel and it’s purpose, for example a kids channel will have bright vibrant colours to attract a younger audience where colours will grab there attention whereas a channel such as SKY will stick to a certain colour because it links with there brand E.G SKY uses blue because of the colour of the Sky but also because it signifies peace and calmness, colour is the most important aspect because it pulls the audience in too watch that certain channel. A good Ident will always have a great design, E.G Channel 4 and MTV,, the reason why channels such as these are so successful are because of there fantastically designed ident’s that attract the audience and the overall audience love the design of the idents. Also, ‘seeing is believing’ so if the audience appreciate the Ident, it is probably likely that they will enjoy whatever is on the channel.

Limitations of an ident

  • They’re many ways an Ident can be boring or too simple, some Idents go for the more ‘artsy and complex’ route which sometimes looks great, E.G Channel 4, but sometimes simple ones such as BBC are boring and can have certain limitations, a ‘bland’ ident can make the audience bored and sometimes want to switch the channel over until the interval is finished, the reason for this is because sometimes idents don't persuade the audience to stay on the channel and don’t use the time that it has to keep the audience going until the next show, especially when some Idents can be as long as 20 seconds which can be way too long. An Ident although looks very nice, can sometimes be to complicated and hard to look at or watch, this can be a limitation because it way not be easy on the viewers eyes. Many Idents are not memorable and you can forget about them not long after they have been on such as the BBC Idents, this is a huge imitation of an Ident because you want them to be memorable and you want them to stick in your head. An ident can be weak by not having a good design or not having a strong idea on what your Ident should be like. A boring Ident can put limitations on it because it will not attract an audience like an exciting and vibrant Ident would, this can lead to serious implications such as your channel not attracting viewers like an ident that isn’t boring.

Design

  • Sports Ident
  • Lighting- the lighting in this ident is very typical of such, Ident’s on big channel’s use high key lighting to give a positive message towards the audience, the reason why bright lighting is good is because it allows the audience the watch the Ident and it also grabs the viewers attention, it sets the tone for a positive Ident E.G Character smiling, cheerful vibes. This is useful because it sends a positive message towards to the audience. Adding to this if an Ident has quite dark and sister lighting, it could possibly look unprofessional and the audience wouldn’t feel as inclined to watch it because it doesn’t appeal to them at all.
  • Colour- The colour used in this Ident are again, very typical, they’re bright vibrant colours that can attract a big audience, the reason for this is, as soon as the audience switches to ITV1 they’re drawn into the channel by the bright and amazing looking colours on the ident, this is important because the colours are one, if not the most relevant design element involved in an Ident, colour matters because it reflects the personality of the cannel, if the colours are dark and bleak, they give a negative image to the channel and this would mean possibly less viewers because they wouldn’t be to what the channel offers.

  • Sound- Although there isn’t much sound involved in this Ident apart from the backing track that is very quiet in the background, the reason why I feel there is a quiet backing track in there is because it helps fill the awkward silence between the narrator talking and there just being a silence. The narrator is very helpful because it tells the audience what is going to be on the channel for the next couple of hours, this is very important for the viewer to know because it allows the viewer to understand what is going to be on.

  • Editing- The editing in this Ident is very small, the only notable editing that I can really see is the voiceover of the narrator and the quiet backing track, I feel there isn’t much editing needed in this ident because it is very simple and the message is very clear on what this channel is advertising during there Ident in this case is sports. If this ident was filled with different elements of editing I feel that it wouldn’t work and would be to complicated for such as simple idea, this is why I feel the minimal editing in this ident is useful for the audience because it gets the message across quickly.

  • Cinematography- There is clear sign of some intriguing camera movements, the main one that grabs me is the medium pan shot of the mother and daughter, this is important because it allows the audience to follow the story by essentially moving with the characters, I feel this is important because it helps the audience understand the story and it helps them become involved in it, although not very noticeable, this camera shot is unbelievably important for the success of the Ident.

  • Narrrative- This is a huge thing for idents, especially now that mostly every channel uses them, they’re so important because it grabs the viewers attention, but also because they’re so many they cant all have the same story or that would get boring, this narrative involves a mother and daughter spending time with each other, this is a great idea for an Ident because it could possibly reflect on how the audience spends there time, but also it is very common for idents to be family orientated so they can relate back to the audience and the audience bonds with the characters during the time that the ident is on because they see themselves in the characters.

Design

Animation- This is without doubt a great animation and possibly my favourite one of the three, the idea is so simple yet so complex, the actually animation is to advertise the Brit Awards, this ident is very popular because of how different it is to any other ident. The animation is very fast paced and really sticks in your head, I feel they have done it this way so it keeps the audience intrigued till the end, this was a great idea because it allows the audience to find out what this Ident/Advertisment is at the end. Adding to this

Colour- Colour is important in any creation, whether it be Art, film, Advertisements and even Idents, the colour scheme is so prevalent in this ident and it catches the viewers attention straight away, the reason why I feel this way is because the colour scheme is Black and White, they have chosen this colour scheme for many reasons, The first point is that it is simple, by making it simple you don’t have to worry to much about what colours appeal to what audience, by going with Black and White this means that you can focus on the animation more because everybody likes the colours black and white because they can mean many things to the viewer. The second reason is that because it is black and white the contrasting colours catch the viewers attention very easily, just like the other ITV ident the colours are huge for the success of an Ident because people see colours in everything and if it doesn’t attract them they won’t watch the rest, this is why colour has to be perfect for an ident because this if it has the wrong colour scheme, doesn’t fit the purpose and doesn’t have any correlation to the narrative it wont make sense to the audience watching the ident.

Sound- The sound for this Ident is very noticeable,, mainly the soundtrack un the background, music is needed to fill the void of silence in the ident, without the catchy backing track the ident would be unbelievably boring for the viewers watching at home and wouldn’t be as successful, because it has the track in the background the ident keeps up with the latest music and not only brings in an older audience but a new, fresh audience with there choice of music, this is why music is so important in Idents because it can determine who your audience is just by the type of music you have in the background.

Lighting- The lighting for this Ident is very different to the one previous to this, firstly the lighting is high key, I think they used this because of the theme of what they’re advertising, this nice lighting along with the animation and music attracts a young, vibrant audience but could also appeals to the older audience who have watched the channel for years,, I feel the lighting is great for this type of ident because it is meant for a certain time such as 5—8pm, I feel this because of the theme of the Ident, but also the lighting the black and white clashes with each other and creates a certain kind of late night mood, the lighting creates an excitable mood and gets the audience ready and makes them look forward too the program.

Editing- Because all of the Ident is animation, they tend to use quick cuts to make sure the audience keep watching and always have something to look forward too, if it didn’t have these quick cuts I feel the Ident wouldn’t have so much success because it would be boring for the younger audience, they’re constantly switching shots and you never see the same shot twice, this is a great edit for an Ident because the audience never know what to expect when they’re watching this which means it keeps them in suspense and wondering what this Ident is actually about.

Design

Cinematography- The camera work in this Ident, although very simple it gives the audience a clear story and works great with what the Ident is about, I feel they used a very simple camera shot (Mid shot) because it appeals to everyone but also because ‘everybody likes dogs’ so by focussing the camera on the dog, it appeals to the majority of the audience, this is a great technique because by getting the audiences attention with the dog, they’re now hooked into the Ident and they're intrigued to what the narrator has to say, I feel the camera shots are simple and work great with this Ident,, a lot like the first Ident I analysed the shot was very simple but had a huge purpose and that is to keep the audience intrigued. Adding to this I think that If they used any other type of shot I don’t think it would work as well, for example a close up of just the dogs face wouldn’t give any explanation of the narrative the Ident, but because you see the setting surrounding the dog the audience can figure out the narrative very quickly.

Editing- The editing of this Ident isn’t very prolific, the reason for this is because it doesn’t need a lot of editing for it to be a successful ident, the Ident has no cuts or transitions to other shots, the only editing is the sound which has been taken out of the original clip and replaced with a voiceover/narrator, this was a great idea because like the first one it has a voiceover that allows the audience to hear what is on the channel next, if this ident had a lot of editing it would have the same effect as it does now, the reason for this is the Ident is so simple yet so effective, it hooks the audience in as soon as you start watching it and allows the audience to understand the character and connect with the characters through a quick emotional attachment (the dog).

Colour- This is a huge element for any live action Idents because they’re representing real life and they need to represent it correctly, I feel they have used the colours in this Ident correctly because they’re quite noticeable such as the props in the back and the glove on the characters hands but the main colour that is of main focus is the Dog, now the dog is the typical grey colour, but the dark colours of the dog have a contrasting effect with the other bright colours on the props and it's a great idea to have dark and bright colours mixing with each other

Narrative- The narrative is important for Live action Idents because it creates an atmosphere and also the story has got to relate to the audience, now, this story will because the majority of viewers of IITV are working class and around 8.5 million people in the UK own dogs(http://www.pfma.org.uk/pet-population-2015) and the majority are working class to middle class, so this Ident relates to what the audience do themselves. It is also important because this narrative grabs the audience’s attention and makes them curious to what is happening, I think this one is particularly good because this Ident can target many different social classes, genders and cultures so it fits perfectly with the theme of ITV.

Sound- Just like the first Ident the original sound has been cut out and replaced with a voiceover, this is very important because the voicover tells the audience what they’re going t be watching for the next couple of hours , it informs them on what is happening and kind of breaks the awkward silence of the Ident, voiceovers are unbelievably important for the success of the Ident because without the voiceover it’s just a video of a dog having a wash, which seems very pointless and doesn’t inform you on what is happening o the channel.

Lighting- The lighting for this Ident in particular is very interesting, the reason why I think this is because it’s very high key lighting, this suggests that the narrative takes part in the day, this would suggests that this Ident is on during the day, this is very interesting because the two other idents suggest through there lighting that they’re for 5pm or later, Lighting for live action Idents is key because if the lighting is good, the ident will most likely fail, it will look unprofessional and won’t be pleasing for the audience to look at.

Target Audience

The colour attracts the audience because the colours they have used for this Ident attract the audience, the colours are bright, vibrant and big colours such as red, blue and white, they have used these colours also because of the theme, The World Cup. They have used these colours to attract a certain audience which is Football fans, because ITV is a British channel they have used the England Flag, the colours represent the country but also hook the viewer in because they will understand it is a football related Ident and will want to know more. Adding to this the colours thy have used are typical of a modern day family such as clothes colours, blues white and reds, although seems irrelevant, it is not, the audience who relate to this will be middle/working class so the common clothing colours will relate to them so therefore they will relate to the characters.

Lighting- The lighting will appeal to there target audience because they will see that it is high key lighting (bright lighting) and will be interested because they will see that it is outside (summer) and this may relate back to there family and what they do in there spare time, they will compare the family who is outside in a place that is lit up brightly to there's because they see a comparison.

Editing- There isn’t to much editing in this Ident, only a voiceover of a narrator. I think they haven't edited the footage to much because during this ident there is a relationship between mother and daughter, I think the raw clip is important because the audience especially the women audience can relate to the to characters in this scene, adding to this, the comparison of characters to audience is great especially for the success of the channel because a lot more than one audience member will be comparing themselves.

Cinematography- The camera shot that is used throughout the clip isn’t ‘fancy’ or ‘impressive’ but it works really well, the shot that they use is just a medium pan shot of the two characters this works well because it shows how close to two characters are but also it shows that there is a strong relationship between them, ITV sought it exploit this so the on screen relationship relates to the audiences relationship with there family by making it intimate and heart-warming, it relates a lot to the audience watching and there relationship with there family, I think that is why it is s successful

because the audience like and understand the motives of the channel which is bringing people together.

Target Audience

Lighting- The lighting for this certain Ident is very different, even though it has high key lighting it just has a different feel and I feel the audience will have different emotions whilst watching this one when compared to the first one. The lighting although can be high key,, it was also low key lighting in some places as well, I think this links with the audience because it links in with there emotions possibly, but also the high key to low key could also represent a party theme, now the target audience is obviously a younger audience so a party theme would although be stereo-typical to put all young people in that category, the theme still works and makes sense to do so. I feel by including young themes such as parties in this ident, although very subtly it works because they can relate back to a memory they have had or shared that remind them of the same emotions they’re having whilst watching the Ident.

Cinematography-

The shots they have used for this animation are phenomenal, they’re quick, fast paced and really exciting to watch. To target there young audience they have to keep them excited to keep on watching and to make sure they don’t lose interest whilst watching, the cool close ups that they do with parts of the animation is really gripping and allows the audience to get hooked into what is happening.

Editing- The editing for this particular Ident is very interesting, unlike the other two Idents, actually the opposite of them this one has fast paced action and is cut ever 1-3 seconds, this is very interesting because when compared with the others they don’t cut there clips at all. This Ident is without doubt for a younger audience you can quite clearly see that the fast cuts and the terrific editing have been done for a reason and that is to keep the younger audience hooked in, because they’re there main audience for this Ident they need to make sure they have the backing and the attention of the younger audience, I think they attract the younger audience because the quick change of camera shot and movement keep the viewer intrigued for what is going to happen next, but also keeps them wanting more. The younger audience needs more action or drama than an older audience to get them on board for something.

Colour- I think this because firstly the colour scheme is different so I think it targets a much wider audience but a very different audience to the first one, I think this because the colours they use are Black and white, now although very simple colours they can have a massive effect on how something looks, the constant white to black colour changes in this Ident are great because it keeps the audience hooked in to the Ident, also the colours they have used can have a wider audience rather than just a mother and daughter, this ident could relate to a young audience, old or more. I think this because at the moment, especially in the western world natural colours like white and black are very popular in clothes, technology etc. So this relates to much younger audience and you can see that through there colour scheme.

Target Audience

Lighting- The lighting for this certain Ident is very similar to to the first one, the reason I feel this way because it is again, a live action ident. The lighting is high key lighting, this helps the atmosphere become more positive and the tone of the Ident, without positive or high key lighting the ident and themes would be negative and wouldn’t reflect the motives of the channel. Adding to this the lighting has to have a more warmer ‘family’ feel because these kind of themes reflect the channel in general.

Cinematography- the shot that was used all the way through is a mid shot that zooms in slowly, I think this is effective because it keeps the viewer watching the ident and keeps them interesting because the dog is the main focus. Adding to this, by focusing on the Animal the audience can relate because they possibly relate to having a pet in there own house, the shots are simple so the audience can follow the simple narrative.

Editing- the editing in this ident is fairly simple, apart from a voiceover there is no video editing, I think this works well because it makes it easy on the eyes and very simple to look at when watching, if you had to much editing, a lot like the BRIT Awards ident, it may get complex and along with the colours it may become difficult to watch and you may not be able to keep up with the information included in the Ident.

Colour- The Colour in this particular ident is very vibrant, the reason for this is because it is live action ident, the colour scheme is very different to the second one I analysed but quite similar to the first one because they both follow the ‘family’ narratives. ITV have used these certain colours because they’re typical colours to be found in a regular household, these colours are important because they represent ideas of family and typical family life in Britain.

Purpose

The design purpose I think for the first Ident is very simple, they did a live action Ident because the audience can relate to it and they’re very simple to do, as well as because of the theme ‘Football’ by doing a live action Ident they can attract a huge audience. The design for this Ident is very good because it suits the style that ITV are going for which is ‘Family Orientated’ you can see this is numerous different Idents, but this one in particular that shows a Mother And Daughter, this is important for ITV to show that they’re family orientated because this means they can grow there brand but also to reach out to a much bigger audience. The design such as the narrative is important because they want this particular Ident to be able to relate with the majority of the audience, by putting a mother and daughter on the screen I feel they do this because people at home will be able to relate to this Ident.

Purpose

The purpose for the second Ident is a little bit different, because it is all animation this Ident takes us down a different journey, The animation itself attracts a much younger audience, (teens) I think this by what kind of colours they have used (Black and White) the colours can signify many things, and because they’re such simple colours they have many meanings, the music they have used is more familiar with a younger teen audience, the music really helps build who the audience are because it is very upbeat modern music, the Ident is actually for the BRIT Awards and by using a more stylish complex Ident that appeals to a younger audience this shows that they are hoping to stretch there target audience out a little bit more to reach a younger audience, also the way the animation has been planned out shows a lot such as how fast is has to be, For Example, it is fairly fast paced but yet very pleasing to the eye, they have made it fast paced so they keep the audience and all the viewers intrigued to what is going to happen next. Adding to this because it is animation, teens are more likely to stay and watch it rather than the stereo-typical live action that sometimes isn’t interesting and doesn’t please the viewer at all.

Purpose

  • The purpose for this Ident is very similar to the first one, they’re both live action Idents, they have done this again so the audience can actually relate to the Ident itself, in this case it is about a man/woman washing there dog, again just like the first one this is very home and family orientated and I feel this is what the purpose of the Ident actually is,, they want ITV to essentially be a ‘household’ name and by using these family orientated themes it makes them almost feel like part of the family, especially with all the characters that are in the Idents, which are all very likeable, ITV have made Idents such as this suited to there band because they’re trying (and succeeding) in bringing in a bigger audience through there use of raw emotion during there Idents.

Opportunities

  • The opportunities such as promotion for this Ident is quite significant, by using this type of Live action Ident it promotes many things such as Women, Football and the ideas are the two, aswell as the channel itself, firstly it is stereo typical to think that women and football cannot be intertwined with each other but ITV go above beyond that and have created an Ident that gives the idea popularity, also I think this Ident is great for women because it shows them in a way women are not seen on camera (typically sexualized) I feel ITV have done an Ident this way not just to broaden our minds but to also make there audience bigger, by using women you instantly get more women audience members, because that certain audience will feel wanted by ITV, I also think they have used this type of Ident because it gives a ‘family feel’ to the channel and that again, instantly brings a larger audience in because it makes the certain audience feel wanted by ITV.

Opportunities

  • The opportunities of this Ident are large, such as bringing a younger audience in with the animation, music and fast paced action, This is perfectly suited to ITV because they’re trying to target a much younger audience, just like the live action family one, they have used certain elements that could attract a younger audience such as the music, the music is important for the success of this ident because it helps attract the audience a it grabs the viewers attention from the start. The design is suited to the brand because it is unique and different, a lot like television these days, by making something quite different and alterative it will appeal to not just a younger audience to actually a wide audience which is very interesting. I think it suits there brand perfectly because they're trying to capture the audiences attention and are trying to gather a large fan base, this is very interesting and it’s a very clever reason to create an Ident how this one is created. This Ident without doubt promote the BRIT Awards and in a very cool and simple way, by grabbing the viewers attention from the start, the Ident then explains at the end what this Ident is advertising, this is a great way to advertise on your channel because it is very simple and could mean a larger audience by the time the BRIT Awards actually start.

Opportunities

  • The opportunities for this type of Ident is very similar to the first Ident, because they’re both live action they target the same audience, they’re both fairly family orientated and involved things such as High key lighting and an intriguing narrative, I feel by using this type of Ident on Television at the right time you can attract a rather large audience that could be important for the growth of the channel, firstly I think it promotes the channels themes, obviously one of there main themes is family, you can see this just by looking at the live action Idents, I think this is an important promotion because it puts the channel in good stead because it gives them a certain audience to work around (working class, middle class families) adding to this I think it promotes there ideas and creativity as a company, although a very simple idea Idents such as this could promote the channel a lot and could actually make them more popular with different audiences around the world.

Limitations

  • I feel there isn’t much limitation to this ident as such, although very simple the message that they send to the audience is large and easy to understand, the message is that ITV care about family, by making it simple it can catch the viewers attention very quickly but on the other hand because it is fairly simple it means that certain audiences may get bored and switch channels because it doesn’t appeal to them whatsoever, I feel the general theme of this Ident is strong and the narrative and design is very good because it isn’t to complex.

Limitations

  • The limitations of this Ident are ideas such as it being to complex. This ident is unlike the two others I have analysed and is actually the opposite, this Ident is fairly complex, firstly I feel it is complex because of the fast movements of the animation but also you also struggle to follow what is happening throughout and only at the end you realise what this Ident is advertising, I feel the Ident being to fast and a little complex may be a limitation for the older generation who cant really keep up with what is happening, I feel this is a big limitation because then it restricts a whole audience of which is large in numbers, an Ident like the previous one is very good because it tells a short story and is very easy on the eyes unlike this one which is quite difficult to follow and because it is for a younger audience they have focused on them more rather than balancing it out 50/50 with young and old because the Ident can get quite confusing. Adding to this the Ident uses a alternative type of art that is very intriguing, this could be a limitation because not everybody may like the art style that is involved and again, ITV are putting limitations on small things that could actually be very important for the success of the channel

Limitations

  • The limitations of this ident are very similar as the first one, because it has a simple story the viewers of it may get bored very quickly, unlike the second Ident it doesn’t make the audience keep on watching because it seems a bit ‘flat’ all the way through, although you do kind of relate to what is going on I just don’t think it is enough to grab the viewers attention. I feel the way this has been shot is quite boring also and restricts itself from being a successful Ident, because they only use one shot the audience is just looking at the same video without any other types of shots for 20 seconds and not really getting any information or knowledge out of it, unlike the BRITS Awards Ident that can give the viewer some information about what they’re watching if they’re watching close enough, by having these limitations on your Ident you’re restricting the growth of your channel because eventually the audience will stoop watching because they will get bored because they're seeing the same Ident formula when they watch the ITV channel.

Which one is more creative?

  • I feel that the World Cup Ident is more creative, the first reason I feel this ia because it is in a more exotic place and actually links to the channels motives at the time that it was on. I feel because it is in a more exotic place it makes the Ident more pleasing for the audience, this is important because the more creativity involved the more the audience will be more drawn to watch it. The reason I feel this is more creative than the other Ident is because the narrative and setting is always important in an Ident and my opinion is that the World Cup Ident has a great narrative that you can follow, but also the setting for this narrative is important and I feel it has everything to be called a great Ident.

  • Unlike the other one, I feel this is less creative because it is unbelievably boring from the start, but I feel this is less creative because it doesn’t appeal to me like the World Cup one does, this is a simple ident that only targets a certain audience and is quite a simple setting, I feel this is the less creative one because it doesn’t appeal to a large audience like the more creative and exciting Ident such as the first one. Adding to this the colours and decorations on the World Cup Ident are hugely impressive and means success for the Ident because it attracts an audience, it is different, vibrant and is a nice change for the audience who are used to the simple Idents that get boring quite easily.

Purpose

  • I feel the World Cup Ident fills it purpose a lot more than the other one for many reasons, the first reason is that it makes the audience excited and ready to watch the world cup, I feel without the small Idents involved in the World Cup campaign on ITV it wouldn’t attract as much viewers, the reason why I feel this is because the Idents are basically a small advertisement and they advertise not just the channel but the programs on it and if you have nothing there to advertise there will be a lot less viewers because they may not be interested as much. The second reason is because the Ident is signifying fun, the channel wants the audience to have fun whilst watching the world cup, I feel this is one of the channels biggest goals for the time that it was on, as well as other Idents this was a big Ident on ITV at the time, adding to this I feel it’s other purpose was to attract a mass audience with the colourful themes and the narrative, these are just some small things that can attract an audience and I feel that by doing these they fulfilled there purpose with this ident.

  • The other Ident with the older woman, I still feel this has purpose and meaning to the channel but in a different way, this Ident obviously is to attract a different audience, unlike the World cup one that is meant to attract many audiences from different cultures I feel this attracts an older generation and does it quite stereotypically, the reason I think this Is because it shows an older woman cutting her lawn and spending time outside. This is generally quite stereotypical, I feel they have done this because it will relate to a large part of there audience, an older generation will see this and relate, making them feel wanted by ITV because they’re being represented on there channel, I have chose the other Ident because I feel that it relates to a larger audience and also hooks the audience in to actually watch the Ident, the colours and setting help bring in a bigger audience making them excited and ready for the World Cup just from watching this small Ident.

Final Evaluation

  • I think that many things make the two Idents successful but I feel the World Cup Ident is actually he more successful one for many reasons firstly the design and purpose, by looking at the design (narrative, colours and themes) you can automatically describe what this Ident is advertising, I feel this makes the Ident successful because the audience can already identify with the Ident and already understand what this is for. The design in general I feel, isn’t flawed at all and gives a very clear message who should be watching this Ident and what it is for, the colours surrounding the Ident really help to give the Ident life and make it exciting for the younger audience who are watching,
  • I feel the things that make the Ident successful are that it only targets a younger audience, my opinion is that this needs to target a wide range of different audiences, although targets a range of different cultures, I feel ITV have stuck with the younger audience in mind when creating this Ident. This is the most unsuccessful thing about this Ident because when advertising something like the World Cup it needs to attract a huge audience and not just a majority of people.

  • The second Ident although not as successful as the World Cup Ident, I still think they’re things that were successful in the making of this Ident such as the ability to put forward a calm and easy narrative that everybody can understand, I also think it is great how they have targeted a group that sometimes gets missed out, the older generation, I feel this is great because every different audience is very important and by including the older generation it signifies that ITTV care about who is watching there Idents and who is involved in them.
  • I feel that this Ident is very unsuccessful in the way that it doesn’t make the audience ‘happy’’ and I feel that it isn’t really worthwhile watching it, although it gives the audience a calm and easy narrative that they can follow easily, it is very boring and doesn’t grab the viewers attention like the Word Cup Ident does. Although it is vibrant and the colours are very attractive, the Ident itself doesn’t make the audience want to carry on watching because in al truth it is boring, and the audience will not want to keep on a channel when there advertisements are boring.

Limitations

  • I feel that the first Ident doesn’t really include any limitations that would stop the Ident from being successful, although I feel they may have had limitations such as the design, they may have had certain limitations such as narrative when designing there Ident, I think this because the Ident is already packed with amazing themes but I think that ITV may have tries to add more to the Ident that they could fit in especially with the time schedule (13 secs) this is a huge limitation because the limited time means that it needs to be quick, snappy and thorough, although they have ticked the three points I mentioned of the list, my opinion is that it would be very difficult for them to fit all the themes, colours and also the narrative into such a short space of time.

  • The limitation I feel they had for the less successful one is making it exciting for the audience and so it appeals to more than one type of audience, in this case I feel they haven’t done this well and the narrative isn’t exciting for the audience, the design elements are a huge limitation, especially the narrative because it is not a fun narrative that the audience can follow, unlike the world cup Ident that follows the narrative of the World cup and Football in general and is appealing to the audience, the colours used although vibrant and typical ‘Earth’ colours such as greens and browns and these don’t appeal to a younger audience because it doesn’t catch the audiences attention at all. Adding to this I think a way that they could possibly appeal to a wider audience and even improve on the narrative is to make it more fast paced, the Ident is 18 seconds long and that is a long time to be waiting for the next show to come on and in that short time the Ident has got to appeal to a mass audience but also it has to make the audience feel welcome and pleased, this Ident doe not do that for the majority audience.

  • In conclusion, I have learnt that some Idents can be boring and some can be very exciting to watch, it is unbelievably important for the Ident to be exciting and for it to please the audience or the channel itself will not be successful, if it has boring elements such as design and narrative that don’t link with the channel or are not pleasing on the eye there is no point in advertising your channel when using that Ident.
