Discussion

    • What is a digital footprint?
      • Your “digital footprint” includes all traces of your online activity, from commenting on news pieces or social media to making online purchases
    • Why is it so important to monitor your digital footprint?
      • People will search you up to learn more about you, your history, your interests and dislikes and anything else they can find!
      • These people could be future employers, supervisors, mentors, instructors or anyone else who may interact with you
      • Any other reasons?

Tracking your footprint

    • Adjust your security settings so you don’t share too much private information
    • Read anything you find online carefully!
      • You don’t want to reshare something incorrect or inappropriate
    • Look back at old posts - do they reflect who you are today and the beliefs you have?
    • Think about what different people who don’t know you might assume about you from looking at your profile
      • You don’t have to restrict your freedom of expression, but remove anything that may be offensive to someone or hurt your reputation

    • Don’t just focus on what you post about yourself - be careful what you say about others!
    • Do not share others’ private information or confidential information (for example, private details of what happens at your workplace)
    • Be careful of the accounts you follow and the posts you like
      • It can say just as much about you as sharing the content or commenting
    • Ask an adult, peer or someone you trust if you’re unsure how something might be perceived
    • Do not share account passwords with anyone

The internet is forever rule

    • Once you have sent a message, posted a picture, made a comment, shared to a blog, uploaded a video… it is there forever!
      • Although you can delete things, people may have screenshots, the items may appear in other places or get leaked
    • If you are unsure whether you should post something, wait 24 hours and think about it
      • Wait until your emotions have cooled down or until you can decide how to express yourself in the best way possible
    • Stay safe!
