What is it?

  • “A sudden forceful recoil”

  • Kickback is the rapid increases of friction between a material and a tool in an unsupported direction that results in the material or tool to uncontrollably jolt.

How does it happen?

  • Feeding material in the direction of rotation
  • Material trapped between the moving tool and a stop block or fence
  • Kerf collapse
  • Poorly supported material or tool
    • Angle grinder
    • Chop saw

How to avoid it

  • Inspect and support your material and tool.
  • Always use blade guards, clamps, grinder handles etc.
  • Ask yourself ‘where is the danger?’ before each cut
