PERSISTENT IDENTIFIERS (PIDS) AND THEIR ASSOCIATED METADATA ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF OPEN RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE.

PIDs enable entities in the research ecosystem (people, places and objects) to be uniquely identified and connected, to create reliable links between them.
When using PIDs, metadata about organisations, people and objects flows reliably between systems/platforms, forming the building blocks of an open research infrastructure.

“As consortium lead for Irish DataCite and ORCID, our goal is to drive PID adoption and integration across member institutions. IReL supports this through tailored onboarding, expert clinics, and ongoing webinars to build capacity and confidence.”

The PID Community Advisory Group established by IReL in April this year runs in parallel to the NORF Action plan and plays a key role in supporting Ireland’s research community. Its job is to share expertise and advice so we can get the most out of adopting DataCite and ORCID nationally. The group focuses on three main areas:

Keeping an eye on international trends and best practices.
Spotting opportunities—both in Ireland and globally—to make the most of PIDs.
Setting national priorities for how we adopt and implement these identifiers.

In short, this group helps ensure Ireland stays connected, informed, and moving forward with PIDs.
