Uses of Argo data at NCEI

  • Daily input to Optimally Interpolated Sea Surface Temperature (OISST) – up to 40% of OISST global data coverage

  • Quarterly updates of the World Ocean Database – aggregating all observing systems and research profile data

  • Quarterly updates of NCEI ocean heat content, salt content, steric sea level, mixed layer depth (new this year)

  • Three times weekly updates of Global Temperature and Salinity Profile Program (GTSPP) – pulled from Global Telecommunications System (GTS) by DFO-MEDS Canada

GADR issues a NCEI

  • Internal – completing transfer of all computer system applications from NCEI-Maryland to NCEI-North Carolina.

  • GDAC mirroring time reduced from 8-14 hours to approximately 3 hours daily thanks to updated file listing from IFREMER/Thierry Carval

  • GADR still mirroring from IFREMER – working with U. S. GODAE to implement rsync with file listing

  • GTSPP still not able to systematically decode BUFR form. Near-real time Argo data added to GTSPP through work around with DFO-MEDS Canada

Contribution to Argo CTD Reference Database: CTD casts to depths > 2000 m for years 2000 to 2020 uploaded to the World Ocean Database between November 2019 and November 2020.

Red: Sourced from the CLIVAR and Carbon Hydrographic Office (CCHDO) 416 casts

Black: Other sources 569 casts

Non CCHDO sources:

Global Temperature and Salinity Profile Program (GTSPP) – Japanese and Canadian sources

International Council for Exploration of the Seas (ICES)

Gulf of Mexico post Deep Water Horizon spill studies

Argo first cycles by quarter 2001-2020 (through Jul-Sep)

Effects of the Pandemic on the Ocean Observing System – paper in preparation. Fewer ship days, difficulty deploying new Argo floats. Little effect on global coverage to this point, but effects may show up as floats die or drift out of some areas.

Marine Climate Data System (MCDS)

  • World Meteorological Organization and Intergovernmental Oceanographic Committee Joint Committee on Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM) solution for providing an international data flow for historic (delayed mode) data, reporting, and metadata.

  • Argo GDAC in MCDS invitation held up

  • There is no more JCOMM. MCDS absorbed into WMO structure

  • WMO Expert team on Information Management (ET-IM) recently formed in part to pick up for JCOMM dissolution.

  • Second meeting of WMO ET-IM Dec 2, 2020 – main topic MCDS.
