Water

Create an artwork in any media that has water as a subject

3 of 57

As the result of trying to not go with the obvious landscape I tried to lean into the more abstract shapes water can create and the colours it can have while flowing over shallow ground.

This is a top down view on light reflexes on quick moving water, cropped out of an old holiday foto, I really liked the different colours I found in a small space.

This dare I tried to show things i really enjoy doing with my son.

The playfulness, the curiosities, and the serenity water can imbue. The one portrait is a depiction of how one can feel when depressed, and water was a good fit for that too.

For this art dare, I wanted to be abstract and create a series with a lot of 3D texture.

These pieces imitate oceans and atmosphere as seen from space or churning waters.

I used spackle, magazine and mulberry paper, and acrylic paint. I sanded back the paint to reveal the colors of water.

I’ve always loved octopi 🐙 this image was created using procreate and involved the use of many canvas to allow for more details.

I had fun playing with the bright colors of ocean life.

I took the reference photo for this piece years ago - it's one of my favourites, as I only noticed the couple on the rock once I went through the photos at home - quite serendipitous.

I feel like I'm too tense in my art so for the waves and rock I used charcoal and white pastel pencil to try and work more loosely. The figures are in matte graphite.

It was my first time using this grey paper, and it was nice being able to focus mostly on the shadows and highlights. I found it challenging rendering the fine spray of the waves - I've used a combination of stippling and smudging.

I started with just wanting to tell a story and had a vague idea for a Grim Reaper type character. I knew I wanted something stylized but that was about it.

Very little of each of these pieces ended up being planned. The pattern in the water, the sky, the shape of the boat were all very much intuitive.

It was kind of freeing to paint that way; it meant I couldn't really mess up.

The main points in mind while painting were to show Death as something that doesn't need to be feared and maybe even cares for the souls that cross over.

Glo-Fish at the Pet Store 🐠🌊

6x6 inches, acrylic on canvas

I always loved the glo-fish at the pet stores, I find them so beautiful and relaxing to look at.

I wanted to create a fun, colorful painting that is both calming and energizing at the same time.

I discovered that fish are a great subject, and if you have a pet store nearby it’s like an infinite source of photo references! 🫧🐠

“WE ARE DROWNING IN HEAVEN”

Plastic, Metal, Water

By featuring the image of many statues of liberty underwater, I aim to examine the dissonance between crumbling institutions and narratives of American greatness.

Can we continue to ignore reality as people drown around us? How many paragons of our identity can go underwater before there are none left? If our greatness is reflected all around us, then there may be fewer than we think.

Drew inspiration for form from Hans Haacke's Condensation Cubes and Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirror Rooms.
