Day 1: What is a Growth Mindset?

(Sinibaldi 2016)

4 of 29

Growth Mindset Definition

People with a growth mindset believe that abilities and intelligence can be developed through persistence and hard work.

When students, teachers and administrators have a growth mindset, they focus on improvement, are resilient when facing setbacks, and are motivated to learn.

People with a fixed mindset believe that their intelligence and abilities are fixed and are not within their control.

Motivation and Achievement

“New research shows we can take control of our ability to learn. We can all become better learners. We just need to build our brains in the right way.” (KHAN Academy 2017)

What does this all have to do with me, a student?

“Students who embrace growth mindsets—the belief that they can learn more or become smarter if they work hard and persevere—may learn more, learn it more quickly, and view challenges and failures as opportunities to improve their learning and skills.” (Concepts 2015)

The Power of "YET"

As students, we sometimes doubt our ability to face a difficult task. Whether that be a tough basketball game, a test, or making the Honor Roll. What we tend to forget, is our ability to turn our energy into literal brain power. We all have energy inside of us, but what we choose to do with it ultimately comes down to us.

We have to remember the power of YET. I haven't mastered my content assessment, YET. I haven't met my goal, YET. I haven’t scored a 4.5 on a project, YET.

Say what?????

“Only 27% of Pasadena ISD students graduate from college within 6 years. Our students need to learn how to direct their own learning if they are going to be successful in college and prepared for the world.” (Moore 2016)

What does all of this mean for me?

If we want to prepare ourselves for the realities of life after high school, then we must learn to be self-directed and have a growth mindset.

**Students who know how to solve problems, manage their time, plan ahead, implement useful strategies, and maintain a persistent and positive attitude are more likely to be successful after high school.

Characteristics of Self-Directed Learners

Listed below are the five self-directed learning behaviors that we will work on developing every day in the Connect classroom.

  • Challenge-Seeking- Self-directed learners are always looking for challenges because they know they will grow when they push themselves to try something new.
  • Persistence-Self-directed learners are persistent even when a task feels difficult, boring and/or challenging.
  • Strategy-Shifting-Self-directed learners realize when it is time to shift strategies, even if it means starting to tackle the problem from scratch.
  • Appropriate Help-Seeking-Self-directed learners feel comfortable asking for help from peers and teachers, and seek to understand the reasoning behind an answer.
  • Response to Setbacks-Self-directed learners learn from failure. They may fail as often, and usually more often, than others. They don’t get discouraged by these failures, but realize that these failures are opportunities to learn, shift strategies if necessary and grow.
