What’s a computer take over?

It’s my way of saying that you want to give or receive control of a computer that is located somewhere else.

We have a few rules of engagement.

1. It’s always done on a case by case basis because the code can only be used once for a limited period of time.

2. Both parties are always aware of the take over.

Teacher Take Over--

Help can be available at anytime.

  • Why not just do a Meet & screen share? It can be very beneficial to take the lead & control what is happening on the other end.
  • Sometime I like to do a Google Meet while I do the “take over” so we can see eyeball to eyeball.
  • You can also just do it with a phone call.
  • I don’t recommend trying the take over unless you have simultaneous communication.

Take over directions for GETTING assistance:

(*with a computer that is maintained by WCCC)

1. Join the link to the Google Meet.

Check your email for the Meet invitation. (We do this so you can explain the problem.)

2. Find the shortcut entitled “Google Remote Desktop” (on their Desktop) or in “WCCC Bookmarks” and click the button that says “Share My Screen.”

Click the blue “Generate Code” button. (The code is good only for five minutes.)

If you are able to find this shortcut, skip 2.5 and go to step 3.

3. Tell your “helper” the access code via Meet or phone call.

They will enter the code on their end & then control your computer for this time only.

Note: This only works with a Chrome browser. The Google Remote Desktop is automatically pushed out to WCCC staff & student accounts.

2.5. If you can’t find the shortcut you can type remotedesktop.google.com/support into a new Chrome browser tab.

Click the blue “Generate Code” button.

Take over directions for GIVING assistance:

(*with a computer is maintained by WCCC)

1. Create a Google Meet & share the link.

(You want to be able to talk to the person you’re trying to help either through the video or phone link.)

3. Tell the other person to find the shortcut entitled “Google Remote Desktop” (located on their desktop) & tell them to click “Share My Screen.”

Have them read the code to you. (Note: The code is good only for five minutes.)

If they are able to find this shortcut, skip 3.5 and go to step 4.

4. Enter the access code into the “Connect to Another Computer” window.

When finished, click “Connect.” If the code is correct, you should have access of their computer. The view will look a little “grey-ish.”

2. Type remotedesktop.google.com/support into a new Chrome browser tab. (Note: You can always bookmark it on Chrome for quick access.)

Find the button that says “Connect to Another Computer.” Be prepared to type the access code that you are given into that box.

Note: This only works with a Chrome browser. The Google Remote Desktop is automatically pushed out to all WCCC devices.

3.5. If they can’t find the shortcut, tell them to type remotedesktop.google.com/support into a new internet browser tab.

Have them click the blue “Generate Code” button & read the code to you.
