COVID-19 Data in Illinois

Currently seeing a decrease in cases (encompasses confirmed cases and probable cases). Experts were expecting larger surge after holiday season.

All of Illinois entered Phase 4 as part of the state’s Restore Illinois program. All regions of the state have had restrictions loosened due to sustained favorable data.

Necessary to monitor several data points, not solely positivity rate. These factors combined give a better picture of spread of illness and transmission rate.

COVID-19 Vaccine

In the US, there are 2 FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccines: Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna

    • Approved for distribution under Emergency Use Authorization (EUA)
    • Several clinical trials are necessary to ensure safety & effectiveness
  • Very limited supply of both vaccines initially; as weeks and months go on, supply is expected to increase

  • In Illinois, each county is responsible for distribution to key groups
    • 1A: hospital personnel & nursing home staff/residents, unaffiliated healthcare personnel
    • 1B: those working in essential industries including education, those 65+ years old - IL entered Phase 1b on 1/25/2021
    • Children are not currently recommended for the vaccine

COVID-19 Vaccine

CDC recommends the COVID-19 vaccine for all individuals (over the age of 16 for Pfizer-BioNTech and over the age of 18 for Moderna), unless those individuals have had a previous allergic reaction (even if not severe) to any ingredient in an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, or if the individual had an allergic reaction (even if not severe) after the first dose. Those who have had an allergic reaction to any other vaccine or injectable treatment previously should consult with their physician before receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

Most common side effects of both vaccines: pain, swelling & redness at injection site; chills, headache, fatigue (tiredness)

Side effects most commonly appear within first few days of receiving either dose of the vaccine. An overwhelming majority of those who experienced localized or systemic reactions reported they were MILD to MODERATE and recovered in a few days.

Systemic reactions (flu-like symptoms) were more common after the 2nd dose of the vaccine

      • Masking, distancing, hand hygiene, cleaning & disinfection/proper ventilation, and contact tracing/isolation/quarantining
    • Studies published showed “scant” transmission of COVID-19 in schools
    • Mitigation measures are what prevents transmission of illness
    • Vaccination is NOT a condition for schools to open
