Foaming Agent Testing - Part 1
Part 1: Utilizing 7th Gen Dish Detergent, Dawn Detergent and Suave Shampoo
Part 2: Drexel Test
September 2021
Measured densities prior to testing
7th Gen @ 80 grams/liter.
7th Gen @ 90 grams/liter.
7th Gen @ 100 grams/liter.
Dawn @ 90 grams/liter
Suave @ 90 grams/liter
Time: 0 minutes. Left to Right: 80, 90, 100 7th gen, Dawn and Suave
At this time in the test all of foams kept their shape and size. The 7th gen soap had slightly larger more visible bubbles compared to the Dawn and Suave. Dawn and Suave had tighter grouping of the microscopic bubbles and that gave it a brighter white color. 7th gen was uniform in its composition but had visibly larger bubbles.
Time: 20 minutes. Left to Right: 80, 90, 100 7th gen, Dawn and Suave
At this time in the test, none of the test had any collapse or shrinkage. Visually the 80 and 90 g/l 7th gen's top layer started to become slightly translucent. Although the Suave looks collapsed, the majority of the foam was still at the top of the top of the cylinder.
Time: 40 minutes. Left to Right: 80, 90, 100 7th gen, Dawn and Suave
At the 40 minute mark we can start to see the foam begin to collapse. In person you can hear and see the bubbles popping. May be hard to see unless zoomed in but the structure of the bubbles in the Suave is different than the others. Although collapsing also, the suave's top structure is still more tight and less spiderweb than the 7th Generation soap. The Suave is also slightly less translucent.
Time: 60 minutes. Left to Right: 80, 90, 100 7th gen, Dawn and Suave
At the 60 minute mark all cylinders have had quite a bit of collapse. 80 g/l 7th Generation collapsed the most by this time. The 100 g/l 7th Gen did not collapse as much as the 80. Dawn and Suave had noticeably less collapse. The Suave stood out here, one can see that the structure of the bubbles, although collapsed, are in a much tighter grouping and smaller than the rest of the tests. At this point in time we could hear and visually see the bubbles in the foam popping away at a rapid rate.
Time: 120 minutes. Left to Right: 80, 90, 100 7th gen, Dawn and Suave
Here we can see the final collapse at the 2 hour mark. The 7th Generation soaps all ended up shrinking to about the same size. The Dawn and Suave have kept from shrinking completely in that amount of time. The Suave lasted the longest and had the least amount of total collapse.
Additional photos
Here are some additional photos at the 120-minute mark. Clearly the Dawn and Suave performed better than 7th Generation. We used the same proportions for the testing. 1 cup of detergent / 2.5 gallons of water.
Graph of the foam test
Red - 80 g/l 7th Gen
Yellow - 90 g/l 7th Gen
Green - 100 g/l 7th Gen
Orange - 90 g/l Dawn
Blue - 90 g/l Suave
Clearly Suave has outperformed the rest of the foaming agents. Since we added all of the foaming agents with the same proportions, perhaps if we added a greater concentration of Suave into the water the foam would last even longer.
7th gen started to collapse a bit sooner, quickly and at a very fast rate. At the 40 minutes mark all foam agents were at a similar height, then at the 60 minute mark there is a large gap between the Suave and the rest. Even just walking into the room I observed the bubbles react to the air moving in the room and that caused the bubbles to disperse.
Dawn seems to be a better alternative than 7th Generation according to the data. I had my doubts because it seemed like it would perform like the 7th Gen, but it proved itself as a better foaming agent.

7th Generation and Drexel Test Results
The results for the foam test determined that the foam produced by Drexel was far superior than the foam produced by the 7th Generation detergent. The foam from the Drexel had far less loss of volume within the given time frame.
In addition, the foam solution which consisted of a higher concentration of detergent produced a longer lasting foam. This was true with both Drexel and 7th Generation detergent.

40 min
60 min
120 min
The Drexel test showed no shrinkage within the first 60 minutes. Only after the 120 minutes mark did we start seeing a collapse (1.4 cm). Unlike the other foaming agents we can't visibly see the foam shrinking over time. This means its shrinking at a very slow rate. This is a major improvement compared to the other foaming agents.

Trial 25 - Little Dragon vs. Aircrete Harry’s Foam Generator
Foaming Agent: Drexel
End of January
Little Dragon vs Aircrete Harry’s Test Results
This test utilized 16 ounces of 7th Generation Detergent to compare the Little Dragon to Aircrete Harry’s Foam Generator. Aircrete Harry’s Foam Generator performed slightly better than Domegaia’s Little Dragon when testing the loss in height of the foam over a span of 75 minutes. Aircrete Harry's Foam Generator showed less loss of height.
