Transport is of fundamental importance for the European economy. Europe can neither grow nor prosper without good transport links. The new European infrastructure policy aims to create a strong transport network in Europe (TEN-T) to connect all 28 Member States. The main objective is to set up and develop a comprehensive transport network comprising infrastructure for railways, inland waterways, roads, maritime and air transport, which will ensure the proper functioning of the internal market and boost economic and social cohesion. Quality transport infrastructure, the fact that the region is situated in the centre of the Czech-Polish-Slovak region with a populace that corresponds to a medium-sized European state, and improving border permeability for the free movement of people, goods and services is creating a whole range of new opportunities.

The ceremonial evaluation of the “Smart Idea” acceleration programme held on 6th December was the culmination of several months of battling amongst Moravian-Silesian start-ups for an award for the best innovative idea of the year. Schemes worth mentioning include a smart office chair designed by secondary school students, an environmentally-friendly project to replace synthetic adhesives with natural fungi and a tourist application based on biometric registration. The winners shared a total of 300 thousand crowns for the further development of their business.

Technology and Business Academy

SOCIAL CARE

This field is awarded 8 subsidy programmes financed from regional funds – in 2020 a total of 137 157 180 CZK was distributed amongst 170 applicants

Support for senior citizens in the form of Senior Passes in the period 2017 – 2019 – 1 154 000 CZK distributed amongst 20 029 senior citizens. The Senior Pass is to support senior citizens over the age of 55 and help get them actively involved in social life.

This is a discount system aimed at health care, the spa industry, wellness, travelling, catering, accommodation, education, admission to museums, galleries and consumer purchases.

Currently the Moravian-Silesian Region provides funding for a total of 13 Senior Points. These are intended to support the life of senior citizens through the implementation of contact points in towns in the individual regions. The primary target group comprises senior citizens (people over the age of 55). The contact points are staffed by trained employees who provide senior citizens with information on safety, social and housing issues, prevention, leisure activities and, last but not least, also the full range of Senior Pass services. They are situated in accessible locations (libraries, social centres, municipal offices, major transport hubs, etc.). Senior Points are situated in the following towns - Frýdek-Místek, Kopřivnice, Ostrava, Opava, Karviná, Bruntál, Vítkov, Jablunkov, Český Těšín, Krnov, Třinec, Frýdlant nad Ostravicí, Nový Jičín. Senior Points are run by several operators. A new Senior Point will be opened in the town of Orlová in 2020.

Family Passes – This is a comprehensive system of discounts and benefits for leisure activities and also routine daily consumer purchases intended for families with at least one child of up to eighteen years of age.

In 2019 support amounted to 412,000 CZK. At present there are 1 262 families involved in the Moravian-Silesian Region, who can take advantage of discounts under the Family Passes project with 3 418 discount providers.

Funding for social prevention services from European structural funds for the period 2016 – 2021 through an individual regional project worth a total of 980.5 million CZK.

The Techno Trail regional project, which unites thirty attractive technical sites in the Moravian Silesian Region, won first place in the Tourism Grand Prix 2019/2020 competition. The Techno Trail won the Best Tourist Product category. Deputy Governor of the Region Jan Krkoška accepted the award in Brno at the GO-REGION TOUR trade fair.

The Techno Trail project originated in 2012 with just twelve technical monuments; today it offers 30 attractive sites. As well as the traditional tourist destinations, such as Michal Mine and Dolní Vítkovice with Landek Park in Ostrava, less well-known locations have also been added to the Techno Trail. The Wesselsky Water Mill and Mill in Bartošovice demonstrate the miller’s trade in practice, visitors to the synagogue in Krnov can listen to the story of industrialists from Krnov, and the Na Trati infantry blockhouse in Bohumín is very attractive to military history buffs.

NATO Days in Ostrava & Czech Air Force Days are the biggest security show in Europe.

The main programme, taking place at Ostrava Leos Janacek Airport, consists of presentation of heavy military hardware, police and rescue equipment, dynamic displays of special forces’ training, flying displays and presentations of armaments, equipment and gear of individual units. This is the only event that brings the up-to-date technology used by soldiers, fire fighters, policemen, customs officers, the prison service, the municipal police and other elite units in one location. In addition to that, each year the organizers try to offer something really special. NATO Days in Ostrava consist also of meetings, presentations, workshops and seminars.

The Post-Mining Landscape – POHO 2030

The post-mining landscape is the area between the cities of Havířov, Karviná and Orlová. This area has been deeply impacted by a long history of coal mining, but today only five mines are still active, and they are all awaiting phased closure. The closure of the last mines will not only affect the landscape; it will have a huge impact on life throughout the entire region. At the same time, the phasing-out of coal mining offers a broad range of opportunities for developing this unique landscape so it will be able to provide both utility and pleasure to local communities and visitors. In response to this unprecedented opportunity, the Moravian-Silesian Region has commissioned the creation of a Development Concept for the Post-Mining Landscape of the Karviná Region.

Zoo Ostrava

The Ostrava Zoo is the second largest in the Czech Republic. It covers 100 hectares and visitors can easily spend the entire day here. The majority of the pavilions have progressed with the times, so guests are not separated from the animals by bars, but, where possible, by natural barriers or glass.

Dolní oblast Vítkovice

In recent years, Ostrava's greatest attraction for tourists has become the Dolní Vítkovice district. The former industrial complex is a unique example of how industrial monuments have been carefully transformed into community and cultural centres. Dolní Vítkovice is the first monument in the Czech Republic that has joined the European cultural heritage list.�

Visitors can learn about the iron production process from start to finish. They can tour the former Důl Hlubina mine, which was one of the deepest in Ostrava. The coking plant is located nearby the mining operations. Here coal was transformed into the coke needed for blasting furnaces. The tour continues with a visit to the smelter, where the iron was melted. Everything has been perfectly preserved and tour guides are present to explain how the entire operation worked. One of the tour’s unique features is the visit to the colossal gas storage reservoir, which, in recent years, has become home to the Gong Concert Hall.

Dolní oblast Vítkovice is also home to the Malý a velký svět techniky science and technology centre, full of interactive educational attractions.

Landek

People interested in learning more about coal mining in Ostrava can visit the largest mining museum in the Czech Republic. It was established in the former Důl Ansel Mine, where you can learn everything about the history of coal extraction and the how mine rescue workers operated. Landek Park, named after Vrch Landek Hill, also offers coalminers' specialities in the Harenda Miner's Tavern.

Visitors descend by an actual lift that had once transported miners in the past. However, the former shafts are not open to the public. Nevertheless, the illusion of the descent is memorable.

Museum Koprivnice

If you want to see the very first car that drove on the roads of the former Austria-Hungarian Empire, go and take a look at the Technical Museum in Kopřivnice. It was here, in 1897, that a coach was born that was not drawn by a horse, but by an engine- the automobile Präsident. And at the museum in Kopřivnice, this motor vehicle can be seen.

Sovinec Castle, located in the Bruntál region, is the largest castle complex of this area and one of the largest in Moravia. It spreads out on a rocky hill, above a valley of the Nízký Jeseník Highlands. At the castle, you can admire the robust medieval edifices and enjoy many different events, such as exhibitions, medieval markets and fencing tournaments held on this historical site. The castle was built in the 14^th century.

The Statue of Cyril and Methodius on Radhošť Mountain

There is no other peak in the Beskydy Mountains that is so shrouded in mystery, myths and superstitions as Radhošť. Apparently, the ancient Celts had already used this place for offerings and it seems that Radhošť even served as a primitive observatory for monitoring the path of the sun to follow the arrival of spring and the onset of autumn.

The ancient Slavs worshiped the god 'Radegast' here - a pagan god of war, victory but also the god of abundance and hospitality. Slavic tribes welcomed the arrival of the spring solstice by lighting bonfires on top of the mountain. Pagan customs nearly prevented the missionaries Cyril and Methodius in erecting a cross in place of the pagan offering site.
