Learning about copyright and fair use provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate the curriculum vision of being actively involved learners and the values of community and respect. Students can explore conceptual understandings in the social sciences and make use of key competencies, especially thinking, and using language, symbols, and texts.

Summarising strategy

Learning about the Kawa of Care

We are learning to identify key points of the Kawa of Care for students when using or moving their Chromebook, use the shortcut keys and the highlighter function.

Teacher was able to grab the transcript and use a Google Doc to scaffold it.

Collaborative Synthesis

Synthesis... is increasing important in a digital context because readers build understanding by reading (parts of) multiple texts and because readers have to reconcile differences and tensions across texts ..There are very few tasks in higher education or in life where a person should rely on just one information source. Even reading online for a very specific purpose will typically involve synthesis across multiple texts.

Collaboration = shared understanding of synthesis.

Limit the Links with ONE portal for learning

We recommend One link for the whole school to remember > Your school website!

Students and whanau should not even need to remember it, they should be able to Google your school.

They should be able to navigate from within the school website to

  • Class or Subject site to access learning
  • Google Hangouts Meet link on Homepage of Site
  • Blog links from Class Site and/or school website

Action Points:

Check school website

Are links to class /subject sites up to date?

Have learners bookmarked the school website in their Chrome browser?

Have they tried Googling the school and locating the website?

Google Sites making teaching visible

Each teacher has a Google Site as a portal for their learners to access their learning, including course content. Smart Teachers

Content may be simply laid out, though many of our teachers have provided extensive engaging, multimodal, rewindable learning content.

Learners should already be familiar with accessing the class/subject site to locate daily, weekly and long term teaching and learning content. Many have been learning in this way for years. Smart Learners

Ensure learners with poor or limited internet have enabled offline browsing and have Docs, Sheets and Slides on their Chromebook. Discuss potentially parking in the school car park periodically to use school internet to reconnect and update files.

Smart Learners: Drive Offline

Action Point:

A stocktake confirming the visibility (accessibility) of class/subject Google Sites should be a priority. This is best done using an Incognito Window as this replicates the experience tamariki will potentially encounter when learning from home on a variety of devices.

ALERT

Remove Barriers

Passwords have always been a barrier. In distance learning they will be more so. Content for learning should be visible with no passwords required. Create a folder in the Google Drive to organise content that will be shared on the Learning Site. Set default permissions for this folder to - anyone with the link can view. Smart Teachers

Action Point:

Check learners are familiar with filing digital content in folders

Display Hapara on screen in class:

Open Sharing Tab > Display Unshared files > Support learners to file them!

ALERT

“Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should”

The Highlights function allows teachers to view student screens during school hours on the school property.

Resist requests to extend this function to screens at home. It is unwise to monitor screens not on the school property.

Hapara Teacher Dashboard making learning visible

Learners should be familiar with filing their digital content in the correct folders (created by Hapara) in their Google Drive.

Teachers should be familiar with using Hapara and interacting with student content.

Teachers should be aware of where to locate documents that are not appearing on the Dashboard. Are they familiar with the Sharing Tab > Unshared files?

This support resource shows what a learner should see in their Drive when Hapara has been deployed.

Google Hangouts Meet connecting us all in real time

Real Time video conferencing, text chat feature, allow participants to talk, mute participants

Google has offered all schools the enterprise version of Hangouts Meet in response to COVID-19.

This allows

  • 250 active participants in one session
  • Ability to Record session directly to a Google Drive Folder
  • Open live streaming for large groups eg whole school to listen in to principal

After discussion with primary and secondary teachers we recommend:

  • Create ONE Google Hangout Meet event and re-use it every day
  • Put the link clearly on the Homepage of the class/ subject Google Site *Update* Consider adding the link to a photo of the teacher, making it less obvious to the public.
  • A Primary Teacher would probably leave it open on a tab during school hours, whilst a college teacher may list ‘office hours’ for different classes next to the link (eg 9-10 Y9 Maths etc)
  • Prioritise inviting learners to the Meet event and making sure they accept the invitation while school is still in session. Don’t leave this to set up after schools are closed!
  • Taking time to practise at school with your learners prior to using outside of regular school hours
  • Empowering your learners to be familiar with the protocols for participating in a Hangouts Meet and being Cybersmart.

27 of 27

Action Points:

Check the settings on Hangouts Meet with Fusion and in your Google Domain. Is it open and available for learners?

Support teachers to create a Hangout link AND to invite their learners to participate in the group (use the Hapara group email address for the class/es)

Support learners to use the link while still at school.

ALERT

Stick with the known - Google - to get us through this period

  • If Google Hangouts Meet has been limited or restricted through your Google Apps Admin Console OR by your Tech provider this will not work!
  • Other companies are now offering their video conference products free. Resist the temptation! Stick with the products the kids are signed up for and you can monitor.
