This slide is is where you make your claims: what the ESLR means and how you grew in it

Tips:

  • Try and choose images that are both aesthetically pleasing and will best represent the concepts you’ll be speaking about.

  • When speaking give the same presentation you would in a normal POL, but more simplified, streamline your speech to better flow in the time you have to present for each slide.

This slide is is where you make your evidence: the artifact(s) that show your growth

justification: how this artifact helped you grow or demonstrated progress in the ESLR

Tips:

  • Here you have more opportunity to go elaborate on your learning and the connections to the ESLR.

  • Your speaking must be supported by the image, the audience is going to be focused on both you and the image so use one that can draw their attention.

This slide is is where you make your justification: how this artifact helped you grow or demonstrated progress in the ESLR

Tips:

  • Be sure to keep checking the POL Year 3 Project Description to make sure you have everything you need for each slide.

(NOTE: You will need three slides like this per ESLR)

Slide Design Tips

  • Use as little text as possible—LESS text is MORE. Left or Right justify. Center is harder to read.
  • Use SIMPLE sans serif fonts like Arial, Helvetica, Futura etc which are easier to read on screen than more fancy serif fonts like Times New Roman.
  • Avoid too many graphics and animations
  • Use simple slide transitions like fade and be consistent throughout
  • Images must advance your topic or contribute meaningful visual information (help tell the story you are narrating)
  • Choose slides wisely...overly crowded slides will be a blur so avoid using more than 4 images per slide... if you don't, make sure there is a design REASON not to follow this rule – See professional examples: pechakucha.org http://youtu.be/L31SwpN1dAc )
  • Have a consistent look/style across the slides but avoid most templates--Neutral (simple) backgrounds are best.

  • Make sure each image has quality basics: higher resolution (not pixelated), adequate size, proper composition, lighting, contrast, color, etc. & not distorted (warped or stretched).
  • Don't try and convey too much on any one slide (in general).
  • Follow copyright law—use your own images and/or creative commons licensed images and site your sources on a final slide at the end of your pecha kucha. See http://creativecommons.org/ See also https://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/
  • When cropping and shaping images to fit the slide, do not let the background of the slide show, fill the slide completely with the image.
  • Vary the format of how you position your images for every slide to ensure your audience will stay interested.
  • If you wish to use a video in your presentation, only use a 30 second clip; you will have to talk over the video so be sure the volume is low so that you and the audience will not be distracted by it while speaking.

Speaking Tips

  • Practice, Practice, Practice
  • The best Pecha Kucha’s are ones where the presenter knows their subject matter and is able to be comfortable talking about it as the slides go on in the background
  • It’s ok to talk about an upcoming slide early or go on a bit into a next slide. This is preferred rather than having pauses. Think of the slides as visuals that are going on as you are telling a story.
  • Use note cards to assist you if they are helpful to remind you as reference points (not for reading directly from)
  • Review the POL Year 3 Project Description Speaking/Listening Component information
