Help-seeking Activity: Instructions for Facilitators

  1. Identify a space in the room where students can stand in a line, along a continuum. One end of the room will be “Always Asks for Help” and the other side will be “Never Asks for Help.”
  2. Read a prompt from the slide and have students stand at a point along the continuum that most reflects their level of comfort in asking for help based on the prompt (if they always ask for help for this topic, stand at one end. If they never ask for help on this topic, stand at the other end. Or they may be somewhere in the middle.)
  3. Once students have lined themselves up, ask for 2-3 volunteers to explain why they have chosen to stand where they are standing. If people moved from one end of the room to the other in between prompts, ask them to share why there was a change.
  4. After students share their initial responses, ask if anything that was shared influenced others. Have you discovered anything about yourself that you hadn’t considered before around your help-seeking tendencies?

Example prompts:

  • Getting something fixed (car, computer, bike, something in apartment)
  • Exam,paper, application or other school-related topic
  • Feeling lonely or want to meet new people/groups
  • Needing emotional or mental health advice or assistance
  • Going through something that you don't think anyone else would understand
