Fresh and colorful foods keep our bodies full of energy longer than sugary snacks and drinks!

Eating fruits and vegetables provides our bodies with nutrients!

Nutrients allow us to see well, fight off germs that make us sick, help our muscles move, heal our cuts, and help our brains think!

Food Freshness

19

19

The freshness depends on the time between when they are harvested and eaten

Lettuce loses 80% of its nutrients in one week after it is harvested!

We will be tasting a colorful variety of extremely fresh fruits and vegetables!

Knife Safety

  • Elbow Room: Make sure you have plenty of space before starting to use a knife
  • Eyes on the Task: Watch what you are doing while using a knife. If you need to look up, stop cutting
  • Claw & Saw: The hand holding the food should be in a claw shape, with fingers curved and the thumb behind the fingers. The cutting hand “saws” with the knife well away from the fingers
  • Low & Slow: Take your time when cutting, and ALWAYS keep your knife at the cutting board, not waving through the air

22

Knife Safety

  • Cut Away From Yourself: Cut away from your body, not toward your body. Keep the knife tip facing the center of the table, and the blade facing down toward the cutting board
  • Knives in the Basket: When you are done with your knife, place it in the knife basket in the center of the table. Never walk away with your knife, and never place knives in a sink or dish tub full of water; someone washing dishes could accidentally take hold of a knife and get hurt
  • Hand it Over Carefully: If you need to hand someone a knife, offer the handle and and point the blade toward the floor, so he or she doesn’t accidentally grab the blade
