Digital Engineering | An integrated approach to use data, models and information in a digital environment across disciplines to support lifecycle activities from concept through disposal. |
Digital Twin | virtual representation that serves as the real-time digital counterpart of a physical object or process. (ISO 24641) |
Digital Artifact | A digital artifact is any combination of professional data, information, knowledge, and wisdom (DIKW Pyramid) expressed in digital form and exchanged within a digital ecosystem. |
Digital System Model | A system model - is used to represent a system and its environment - may comprise multiple views of the system to support planning, requirements, architecture, design, analysis, verification, and validation - is a representation of a system with various degrees of formalism often expressed as a combination of descriptive and analytical models.�The system model is an integrating framework for other models and development artifacts including text specifications, engineering analytical models, hardware and software design models, and verification models. In particular, the system model relates the text requirements to the design, provides the design information needed to support analysis, serves as a specification for the hardware and software design models, and provides the test cases and related information needed to support verification and validation. (ISO 24641, 2021) |
Digital Engineering Ecosystem | A digital engineering ecosystem includes enterprises' interconnected digital environments, stakeholder-networks, and semantic data that allows the exchange of digital artifacts from an authoritative source of truth to serve the stakeholder communities' interests. |
Digital Thread | lowest level design and specification for a digital representation of a physical item�Note 1 to entry: The term digital thread is also used to describe the traceability of the digital twin back to the requirements, parts and control systems that make up the physical asset (ISO 24641) |
Digital View | A digital view is a visual presentation on an electronic display device of one or more processed digital artifacts, enabling the consumption of digital artifact content according to stakeholders’ unique activities at any phase or step in the system life cycle. |
Digital Viewpoint | 1. form of abstraction achieved using a selected set of architectural concepts and structuring rules, in order to focus on particular concerns within a system [ISO/IEC 10746-2:2009 Information technology — Open Distributed Processing - Reference Model: Foundations, 3.2.7] |
Model-Based Engineering (MBE) | A software and systems development paradigm that emphasizes the application of modeling principles and best practices throughout the life cycle. (ISO 24641) formalized applications of modeling to support systems and software engineering. |
Model Curation | Model Curation is the lifecycle management, control, preservation and active enhancement of models and associated information to ensure value for current and future use, as well as repurposing beyond initial purpose and context. |
