2029 WORLD BEARD AND MOUSTACHE CHAMPIONSHIPS: SPOKANE, WA

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Thank you for considering Spokane, Washington to host the 2029 World Beard and Mustache Championships. Spokane Beard & Mustache, Visit Spokane, and the Spokane Sports Commission are partnering together to bid to host this prestigious event. Our local organizing committee is passionate, creative, experienced, and committed to your event success.

SPOKANE: A SMALL CITY WITH BIG AMENITIES

Spokane prides itself on being the perfect destination by providing visitors with a lively, unique experience. Downtown, visitors will find a vibrant culture with distinctive restaurants, pubs, shopping, and entertainment.

Centrally located in the Northwest, Spokane is a scenic drive for participants, families, and fans from Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Western Washington. Spokane International Airport is a quick flight from many places in the country—and travelers enjoy minimal airport traffic and a short ten- minute drive to downtown.

COMPETITIVE CULTURE

Spokane is a city that embraces sports—and not just traditional sports. We have a fun culture that makes the most of new and unique experiences. In 2012, the community rallied around the first ever USA Women’s Boxing Olympic Trials and had record-breaking attendance for the Women’s NCAA Basketball Championships. We often host lesser know events such as Tandem Bike Road Rallies and Flat Track Roller Derby Tournaments—each bringing a unique culture and experience to town.

CHAMPIONSHIP VENUE

The Fox Theater

Seating Capacity: 1,700

September 3, 1931 marked the opening of the Fox Theater. As the first air-conditioned building in Spokane and the most advanced technology of its day, the Fox was an impressive addition to the city. The Fox played host to countless stage performances—including Katherine Hepburn, Marian Anderson, Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, and Frank Sinatra.

In 2000, the Fox Theater went through a $31 million overhaul to restore it to its former beauty. The 1,700-seat theater is located in the heart of downtown’s Davenport Arts District and has been nationally recognized for both the aesthetics and acoustics of the building. In the renovation, the theater gained much-needed space for additional dressing rooms, a staging area for catering, ticket office, and an expanded lobby.

The Fox Theater is truly a great fit for the Beard & Moustache National Championships. The Theater has a vintage vibe and a reputation for being spectator friendly due to its stadium seating, lighting capabilities, and high-quality sound system.

Ticketing: The Fox Theater has an extraordinary ticketing staff that could handle day-of and presale tickets to the event, if desired.

Stage: The stage is approximately 52X20.

Dressing Rooms: The Fox Theater has two group dressing rooms with restroom facilities and can accommodate up to 50 competitors at a time. In addition, the Fox has a conductor’s dressing room with a restroom and shower and 3 spacious guest artists’ rooms for judges.

Seating: Ability to accommodate up to 1,700 attendees.

Projector: The Fox Theater has a 16’X20’ screen that can project sponsor logos, or a close up of competitors on stage.

PA System: The Fox Theater has an impeccable sound system that can accommodate the need for house music and 2 wireless microphones. Additionally, features include 7 full range cabinets and one subwoofer per side.

Food & Beverage: The Fox Theater has a full liquor license and will work to accommodate the needs of attendees. In addition, The Fox Theater works exclusively with Glover Mansion Catering for onsite concessions.

Proximity: Located walking distance to a number of downtown hotels, restaurants, and pubs.

WHY SPOKANE

14 of 17

2029 WORLD BEARD AND MOUSTACHE CHAMPIONSHIPS: SPOKANE, WA

WHY SPOKANE

Spokane, Washington, located near the heart of the Inland Northwest, is home to nearly 600,000 residents and has more than 785,000 living in the surrounding area. Our city serves as a shopping, entertainment, sports, and medical hub for an area that includes Eastern Washington, Eastern Oregon, North Idaho, Western Montana, and southern portions of Alberta and British Columbia.

This last year, The National Beard and Mustache Competition was held in this state and brought in 179 with over 100 of those being from Washington State. Bearding is big in the Pacific Northwest.

Spokane became the smallest city to host a World’s Fair when the expo arrived in 1974, yet the event still attracted more than 5 million people, proving that we are small but mighty.

We are home to Bloomsday, the largest timed road race in the nation, as well as Hoopfest, the largest three-on-three street basketball tournament in the world. Ironman is held each year in beautiful Coeur d’Alene, Idaho—just a 30-minute drive away.

Because of the success of our college basketball team, the Gonzaga Bulldogs, we have gained lots of notoriety in the sports world.

Spokane is famous for our dedicated sports fans. MarketWatch named us in the 2011 Ten Best Minor League Sports Markets—partly due to our Arena Football League’s Spokane Shock and the Class-A Spokane Indians, who’ve been playing baseball here since 1946. Our Texas Rangers-affiliated Indians Baseball Team has led the Northwest League in attendance for the past 12 years. Our die-hard fans also consistently fill the seats for the Gonzaga Bulldogs, Eastern Eagles, and Washington State Cougars. In Spokane, sports reign supreme.

RAISING THE BAR

Spokane has proven over and over again that it is a city that rallies around sporting events. In 2007, Spokane hosted the US Figure Skating Championships, which was named the Sport Event of the Year by Sport Travel Magazine. In 2010, Spokane was once again awarded the US Figure Skating Championships and set a new attendance record with 158,170 tickets sold during the 10-day event.

The 2011 NCAA Women’s Basketball Sectional Tournament at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena drew the largest crowds in NCAA Women’s basketball history with 11,646 fans viewing Saturday’s Sectional final pitting Gonzaga against Stanford.

The 2012 Jason Crawford Memorial Wrestling Tournament, held at the Spokane Convention Center set a record in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest one-day wrestling tournament in the world with 1,340 athletes participating.

CLIMATE

Because of Spokane’s location between the Cascade Range to the west and the Rocky Mountains to the east and north, the city is protected from weather patterns experienced in other parts of the Pacific Northwest. The average rainfall in the Spokane area is 17 inches a year, half of the amount of rain experienced in Seattle.
