Project Cornerstone

  • Founded in 1999.
  • Survey showed that most youth in Santa Clara County are missing the positive relationships, opportunities, values, and skills— known collectively as “developmental assets”.
  • These provide the foundation for a healthy, successful future.

Developmental Assets

  • Young people with high asset levels are most likely to make healthy choices, while those with lower asset levels are more likely to get involved with negative or risky behaviors like violence, trouble in school, drug and alcohol use and more.
  • 41 Developmental Assets - Support, Empowerment, Boundaries and Expectations, Constructive Use of time, Commitment to Learning, Positive values, Social Competencies, Positive Identity.

Goals of ABC Program

  • ABC - Asset Building Champion
  • Goals -
    • Increase the number of developmental assets in all children and adults.
    • Increase the number of caring adults that students interact with at school to enable them to feel increased levels of support and value.
    • Create a common language and vocabulary about respect in each school community.

Volunteer Goals

  • Build a relationship with young people by reading specially selected children’s books and leading classroom activities.
  • Lead meaningful discussions that focus on important issues like respect, tolerance, integrity, peaceful conflict resolution, honesty, caring, and friendship.
  • Provide students with tools to become an UPstander, deal with negative social behaviors, and enhance social competencies.
  • Build a common language and set of expectations for behavior, which leads to creating a more caring, positive school climate.

Volunteer Requirements

  • Love working with children in a classroom setting.
  • Be comfortable leading age-appropriate discussions and activities in the classroom.
  • Communicate well with adults and children.
  • Time commitment 1-2 hours/ month: Oct - May - Flexible depending on your schedule and the teacher’s!
  • Complete YMCA application/Assets 101 Training
  • Complete CUSD volunteering requirements

Important Volunteer information

  • Live volunteer training sessions are available on zoom through the YMCA - they are called the ABC Monthly Trainings and you can register for them through this link - https://ymcasv.zoom.us/meeting/register/IuD98d20Rg2jUH7t0rSw-g#/registration. The recordings of these trainings will be available on the YMCA website. Going forward, we will be using these recordings for all our prepping.
  • Readings should occur monthly starting in October (no book in December; full schedule available on Stocklmeir Project Cornerstone website)
  • All lessons should include: #1) ice breaker / intro, #2) reading, #3) discussion, and #4) activity (time permitting)- this information is provided in the lesson plans.
  • All books are available on the Project Cornerstone shelf in the copy room adjacent to the school office (can borrow books for 24 hours, must log name on sign-out sheet)- shout out to Suhasini for organizing this!

Things to do before you read in class!

  • Write to your teacher, or check the google sheet with volunteer names on it to find other parents in your child’s class or write to projectcornerstone@stocklmeirpta.org so we can help you connect with your reading partner(s)
  • Connect with other parent volunteers - decide if you will read to the class in teams/ individually
  • Email teacher to schedule day/ time of readings in advance
  • Prior to day of reading- request teacher to have all children wear name tags; email video links etc that you will use in your session (if any)to the teacher
