Volunteer Awards
PTA is a volunteer driven organization. To provide all of the amazing programs and events a local PTA may provide for their community it requires many dedicated volunteers. To encourage and recognize the outstanding work of volunteers, Massachusetts State PTA (MA PTA) provides multiple individual recognition awards that local PTAs may choose to award to deserving volunteers. Local PTAs develop their own timeline for recognizing volunteers, nomination form(s), and rubric for determining eligibility. Each unit can submit up to 8 nominations, 1 for each candy listed below.

Starburst- You always burst with energy and excitement
Brooke Leahy- “Constant commitment, dedication and enthusiasm for all elements of PTA work. “
Elise Dubois- “As the Reflections chair for the past four year she has resurrected interest and excitement in this program and the participation continues to grow each year. She even included the middle school students the past two years. I call her our "Energizer Bunny"! She attends and actively participates in PTSA events as the schools assistant principal, she is a great role model who always wears a smile.”
Carolyn D’Amato- “She is always bursting with energy and excitement. She brings so much fun and laughter whenever she helps out. Full of sarcasm and quick wit, she makes even the most daunting tasks fun. Carolyn introduced us to the fun of our very successful Penny Wars fundraiser and she is our (near) professional cotton candy maker. She’s full of fun ideas! Carolyn, we are so happy that we brought you to the “dark side” of PTA—you are a true asset to our team!”

Pay Day- You always keep us on budget
Michelle Oteri- “Michelle always has our local units financial best interest at heart and on her mind. Whether it ensuring we get the best price on pizza for our functions, or double checking that our grants are getting utilized properly we know she’ll be keeping us in the black.”
“Works numerous hours above and beyond ensuring that budgets are met and funds are appropriately distributed to maximize benefits for our school. “
Caitlin Unger- “She has been a key part of the PTA's growth these past few years. She is a co-chair of our Turkey Trot and has not only managed our business partnerships but she has also grown this revenue from year to year. She provides new value to sponsors each year, which in turn gives the PTA the ability to provide for the school. this was a key reason why we were able to buy two new guided reading library blocks for the school.”
Traci Cady- “She has been a member for the past eight years. She was the Treasurer for over five years. She continues to mentor each new treasurer for the last four years and still maintains the website, financial accounts and records. She continues to help explain and educate on the budget process and keeping things balanced. Further, she volunteers to do the taxes and has for over seven years!”

Crunch- You are always help others when they are in a crunch
Heidi McDonough- “Heidi consistently comes through when we need an extra pair of hands. She will step up to work a game booth at the Halloween party at a moments notice, just as quickly as she’ll whip up a batch of stuffed peppers for the teacher appreciation lunch.”
Nerrisa Wallen- “she is always willing to help us out in a crunch! Nerissa is the type of person that you know has your back. She’s a member of the School Committee, runs our school book fairs, fights hard for best interest of the schools in our district and throughout the state and so much more—she’s an incredibly busy women yet she always finds the time to help out whenever she is needed. She’s been known to make the most amazing desserts for teacher conferences, pop a mean batch of (very slow popping) popcorn and stuff hundreds of book bags. She also knows EVERYONE at school and can help us find them when we are making special deliveries. Nerissa, you are simply amazing and we are so lucky to have you on our team.”
Nicole Fisk- “She has been a member for the past six years. She is the quiet one who has been a loyal member for the past six years. She is always willing to help behind the scenes and will do whatever is asked. She volunteers her time, donates goods and constantly donates from her families two businesses, both goods and money. She will always be there in a crunch; when you run out of food, need more decorations, etc. She is also a classroom parent.”
Jen O’Hanlon- “despite her heavy work commitment she is always willing to step up and invest her time and energy into whatever is needed.”

3 Musketeers- You are loyal and a good friend
Karen DeRoche- “She has been a PTSA member for the past ten years and was on the Board as President, Vice President of PRES, and acting Secretary for six of those years. She is a loyal and good friend and tries to keep everyone on friendly terms. She will give others the benefit of the doubt and keeps an open mind in tense situations. “
Kerry Dei- “she is such a loyal and good friend to all of us. Whether she’s whipping up her red hot chili at the last minute so we can have a vegetarian option for teacher conferences, counting hundreds of carnations or cleaning up spilled hot chocolate—she’s always there with a smile on her face and asking what she can do next to help. Kerry, we are so fortunate that you are an amazing volunteer and friend, thank you for always being there!”
Sue Sanford- “Susan is our president’s right hand woman. She ensures that through her encouragement and enthusiasm we all stay on track and do our best for our school and community. Her friendly demeanor draw people in and her genuine nature keep them around.”

KitKat- You are always helpful and give others a break
Kate Cheropowich- “She has been a member for the past seven years. She was on the board as the Vice President of PRES for a year. As the co-chair of the talent show, she is very helpful to all. She is always coming up with new ideas for programs that will directly help our students; collecting legos for a club; an after school STEAM group; an author program, etc. She will also be the one at the School Committee meetings asking all the hard questions and advocating for what is best for the children. She is also a classroom parent.”

Extra- You are a hard worker and go the extra mile
Valerie Carey- “She has been a PTSA volunteer for the past six years. She volunteers behind the scenes and chairs the Child Choice Dance. Valerie turned the dance into an event that was inclusive and affordable, with the approval of the Principals after the fiasco that erupted when the previous dance event was cancelled because the administration would not support the PTSA holding the event in the previous format. She does an extreme amount of research on everything she is involved with, spends lots of time coordinating everything from the major tasks to the details and never gives up on something she believes in. She is a hard worker and always goes the extra mile. She genuinely cares about the students and the PTSA.”
Jennifer Johnson- “she is such a hard worker and always goes the extra mile in everything she gets involved in. She is the ultimate scene setter and it has become her “job” to set up tables with food at our annual staff appreciation luncheon. This year she carried that talent over into setting up for our Trivia Night fundraiser. Jen is always calm and cool and keeps us focused and working in the right direction. She is always thinking one step ahead and always works hard until the second she has to run out the door. Jen, we are so glad that you share your many talents with us and work so hard on everything you get involved in—this team is so lucky to have you!”
Claire Crowell- “Claire has really jumped in with both feet and then some this year. She logged tons of hours helping with the Boosterthon Glow Run, doing everything from handing out prizes and organizing T-shirt’s to taking it upon herself to create a PTA email address complete with a database of the email addresses of each and every student and staff member. She is an invaluable asset to our local unit!”

Pop Rocks- You rock our world!
Nellie Lima- “She has been a member for the past six years. She works a lot behind the scenes and surprises others with her quiet participation. She also chairs the staff appreciation lunch and is a classroom parent. She is co chairing the FUNRUN this year and will rock the gym at the pep rally for sure! She rocked our world when she created our PTSA Facebook page; she ushered us into the social media world three years ago and she continues to run the Facebook page. She is always popping with energy! She has served as a classroom parent for several years.”
Carla Cogliani- “she simply rocks our world! She is my go to person to help me out with anything—whether I need her to help me for a quick minute or to put in a whole day volunteering at school, she is always willing to change up her schedule to help in any way that she can. She helps with bulletin boards, classroom parties, nearly every event that the PTA puts on and so much of the behind the scene work that most people don’t even realize happens. Carla, you are a rock star and we are so thankful for all you do!! “

Rolo- You always roll with the punches
Kelly Laferriere- “She is so easy going and truly rolls with the punches. Kelly came in to help out one day—little did she know that she would become a “go to volunteer”. Kelly goes with the flow and is always willing to do whatever is needed. If she’s available, she’ll be there. Kelly, we are so happy that you are so willing to take part in all the crazy, you truly are a wonderful addition to this team!”
Sherry Mayer- “She has been a PTSA volunteer and member for over five years. She has co-chaired the book fair several times and volunteers on other committees. She will help anybody do almost anything. She rolls with the punches for sure; especially when things are changed, even when she disagrees with the changes. This attitude is contagious and has been helpful in many situations. She is always happy and upbeat.”
Jen O’Hanlon- “Jen consistently shows up and is always willing to jump in to do something to help, whether it’s in her comfort zone or not. Her Ability to participate and cooperate, even if she had a differing opinion to start with, is a fantastic asset to our local PTA.”
