What do Assistant Principals do?

ELPAC Testing

  • Students take the Initial ELPAC shortly after starting school in California.
  • They need to take the ELPAC every year in the Spring.
  • The ELPAC is one way we see how your student’s English is improving.
  • Once students score a 4 on the ELPAC and are reclassified, they don’t have to take it anymore!

Initial ELPAC Scores

  • Initial ELPAC Scores will be sent to your home.
  • This test tells us generally whether students are “English Learners” or “Initially Fluent” in English.

Reclassification

How do students become Reclassified as Fluent English Proficient?

  • 4 on the ELPAC test
  • Grade of A, B or C in your English Class
  • Parent Communication
  • Test Score: ONE of the following:
    • Score 2543 on the SBAC in English in 8th grade
    • Score 2560 on the SBAC in English in 11th grade
    • 3 on the Star Reading (grade 9,10,11 or 12)
    • 3 on the AP English Language Test (grade 11)

Bridging: ELPAC Score of 3-4

Reclassified: Was English Learner, and met criteria to be redesignated as Fluent English Proficient

ALL MLL students Must Take an ELD Class

Placement in ELD Class level is based on:

  • ELPAC and other test scores
  • Teacher recommendations

TPHS has:

  • English Language Development (ELD) 1, 2,3, and 4.
  • Academic Literacy
  • Advanced English Language Literacy

If parents/caregivers wish to excuse a student from ELD,

they should contact Ms. Butler

English Language Development

Designated ELD

  • This is a special time during the school day just for ELD.
  • This is the student’s ELD class.
  • The teachers use the California ELD Standards.

Integrated ELD

  • This is when ELD happens in different subject areas.
  • Content area (like Math, History, Science or English) teachers support English Language Development in their classes.
  • Teachers use their CA Content Standards and the ELD Standards together.

“Emerging” Multilingual Learners need intensive support.

Student Profile

  • Newcomers are beginning English Learners who are new to the US.
  • Students who have been in US Schools 3 years or less AND, in general, have a 1 on the ELPAC.

ELD Course

  • English Language Development 1 (for 2 class periods)

Other Courses as needed:

  • Structured English Immersion (SEI) Biology
  • SEI Math 1 Readiness
  • SEI Math 1

*SEI courses we offer may change each year.

  • Grades are in Aeries
  • Grades are based on class work, homework, group projects, tests
  • Grades at the Semester (January and May) are the official grades
  • Official grades (marks) go on the student’s academic record (transcript)
