How CICO Works

  • Each student is matched with an adult in the school
    • These adults are also called "Greeters" in some schools in the district

  • Students check-in with their greeter in the beginning of the day
    • Sometimes the greeter needs to go to the student

  • Students are reminded of the school rules and their goal if one is set
    • For younger students, "Aim for 16 twos!"

  • Students are given points at designated times throughout their day by their classroom teachers

  • Students check-out with their greeter and given only positive feedback or guidance on how to do better for the next day

CICO Form

*Teacher buy-in with how the form looks and works.

7 of 42

CICO for Classroom Teachers

  • Teachers have a designated spot in their room for the sheets

  • At each time period, teachers conference with each student in a private location to talk to them about their score in relation to school rules and their behavior

  • Teachers remind students to check-out with their greeter 10-15 minutes before school ends

8 of 42

CICO - Individualized

  • For students who struggle to meet their 80% goal, the Tier II team (along with classroom teachers) meet to individualize that student's CICO

  • How points are given, overall percentage goal, and number of times throughout the day to check-in with their greeter is taken into consideration

  • The regular CICO form along with a sheet (attached to a binder) detailing how points are given are shared with parents, students, and staff members

Individualized CICO Form

10 of 42

CICO for Classroom Teachers - Students with Individualized Goals

  • Classroom teachers and support staff are notified of all changes made to individualize a student's CICO form and process

  • Classroom teachers follow the same process of conferencing with students about their behavior and points on the sheet

  • Student's data is then reviewed 2 times per month at the Tier 2 meetings
    • All other processes that are included for CICO are also included for students who have individualized goals

11 of 42

Individualized CICO - FBA/BIP

  • Individualized CICO should relate to FBA/BIP documents (when applicable)

  • All parents, teachers, and staff members should be informed of any updated/new information related to Tier 2 services

12 of 42

Monthly Letter to Parents

  • Sent home on the 1st of each month to inform parents of their child's progress in the CICO program

  • Letters are created to address various information to parents
    • Positive gains in CICO
    • Not enough Data
    • Not meeting 80% benchmark

Fidelity with CICO

  • To increase fidelity of CICO
    • Reminders/posters are sent to all staff members
      • Completing the form at the designated time frames
      • Checking-In and Out
      • Turning in the sheet to be entered in SWIS
      • Memos in staff newsletters and at meetings

    • Updated graphs (without student's names) are sent monthly to all staff members to show progress and updates

Weaning Students from CICO

  • Student data is reviewed to see if they have met the 80% goal (overall) for 4-6 consecutive weeks

  • Conversation and celebrations are shared between student and parents, student and staff members

  • Students complete their own sheet for 2-3 weeks (give themselves points) and continue to check-in and out with their greeter - 80% is still the goal

  • Conversation is held with the student, greeter, and parents about graduating that student from CICO

Challenges

  • Getting classroom teachers to complete the CICO form at all designated times with the students

  • Multiple classroom teachers for one timeframe
    • Use highlighter, full-time classroom teacher has overall say

  • "Needs Improvement" (N) compared to "Some of the time" (1) compared to "Most of the time" (2) can become inconsistent markings for different teachers
    • At times, one behavior might be marked as a 1 or 0

20 of 42

Moving Forward

  • Fidelity Checks with CICO and all staff members

  • Student input

  • Monthly celebrations for students meeting goals
