Click here to view this year's Lewiston-Porter One District, One Book page.

WHAT IS ONE DISTRICT, ONE BOOK?

One District, One Book is a program designed to create a shared reading experience across our school community.

  • Families will vote on a popular children's novel at one of our local libraries.
  • Each student receives a copy of the chosen book to keep.
  • Then, every family reads that book together at home while enjoying the provided packet of conversation starters, activities, and reading schedule.
  • The shared reading experience will be supported by enriching activities at school and around town with our community business partners.
  • Our program concludes with a Family Reading Celebration evening filled with fun activities!
  • Students and families can follow the ODOB opportunities on Seesaw (PEC & IEC) or Google Classroom (6th Gr.).

Every family in our Pre K- 6th Grade Community reads the same book at the same time!

Lewiston-Porter One District, One Book MISSION STATEMENT:

Our goal is to create an engaging and immersive shared reading experience which takes place within our families' homes and within the entire community. Our initiative is supported in the classroom and our elementary buildings PK-6 and encourages partnership with our three local libraries and local businesses. Simply, we create excitement, momentum, and a buzz around a piece of literature while supporting family literacy!

Visit https://readtothem.org/one-district-one-book/. for more information about the One District One Book family literacy initiative.

kyager@lew-port.com

~Meeting Information~

There will be one initial training meeting. Students will have a rotation of safety patrol duties.

Description:

  • At the Intermediate Education Center we offer a leadership program to all 5th graders. The program is supported and encouraged by the AAA School Safety Patrol Officers in New York State. It allows schools to offer this opportunity to 5th graders who are looking to learn and fulfill responsibilities regarding traffic safety, however it has evolved into much more at Lewiston-Porter. Our 5th graders are trained to look out for safety situations always when out on the bus loop helping children, but our mission is to grow as a leader and role model all around. We focus heavily on leadership, teamwork, citizenship, and character building opportunities. Their expectations include following the Safety Patrol Membership Pledge, setting good examples for other students, attending any necessary meetings, reporting to duty on time and prepared, and being a leader as a learner within the classroom. We begin the process of educating our 5th graders on this yearly opportunity in September. Training begins in October and throughout the year we are checking in with our leaders, speaking to their teachers and families when necessary, and scheduling them for their rotations. Finally, at the end of the year we celebrate and honor each of our 5th grade safety patrol leaders. It is a great way to leave the IEC and begin the journey into middle school.

WEB

Description:

WEB

Where Everybody Belongs

The structure of the WEB program guides 6th graders to academic and social success by reducing the initial challenges of entering middle school. WEB helps create an environment where 6th graders feel cared for and supported by creating an atmosphere free of bullying, intimidation and fear and replacing it with support, connection and a sense of comfort and belonging. The transition to middle school can be a major event in the life of a young person, and yet very few effective strategies for support exist in most middle schools. Because the move to middle school can be stressful and frightening, 6th graders often experience lowered academic achievement and difficult social adjustments. WEB eases this challenging time period by offering the 6th graders a solid and safe foundation to begin their middle school experience. With WEB, students help students succeed by using older students as peer mentors for the 6th graders. WEB Leaders are members of the 8th grade class who go through extensive training to become positive role models, motivators and teachers. The WEB Leaders also serve as a catalyst for change by modeling positive behavior for their peers, thus reducing incidences of teasing and bullying and helping to make middle school a place Where Everybody Belongs.

8th grade leaders are chosen based on an application process and teacher recommendations. The application process begins in the spring of each year. For more information on the program please visit https://www.boomerangproject.com/

Science National

Honor Society

In this era of rapidly changing technologies and scientific advancement, it is time to encourage and recognize high school students in the Sciences.

SNHS is a prominent scientific organization that will engender a new group of young thinkers who will be the future of industry, research, and scientific exploration for America.

This academic achievement club requires an invitation and application process and is open to Juniors and Seniors who qualify.

SNHS is not directly affiliated with the National Honor Society but we do maintain a cordial and professional relationship with that organization. Students may be inducted into both.
