The IB Diploma Programme

  • Seaquam’s IB program offers both the Full IB Diploma Programme as well as individual IB Diploma Courses (partial program)

  • Every subject is completed over a two-year period beginning in grade 11 (students make a commitment over both grades 11 and 12)

Diploma Programme Assessment

  • IB Diploma is based on the combined total of points across six courses (on a scale of 1 to 7), plus 3 additional points for the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity & Service (CAS).
  • Maximum score = 45 points
  • 24 points needed to gain the IB Diploma (plus passing all core components)
  • Minimum of 2 in SL/ 3 in HL courses needed
  • Scores of 5 or above in individual higher level (HL) subjects may be eligible for some post-secondary transfer credits.

Full Diploma Programme Subjects

  • Students in the Diploma Programme have choices of subjects from six groups

  • One subject is selected from each of Groups 1 to 5; a sixth subject can come from Group 6 or an additional subject from Groups 2 to 4

  • To qualify for an IB Diploma, students take three HL (higher level) subjects and three SL (standard level) subject. Some students may take 4 HL and 2 SL subjects, as well.

Core Components of the Diploma Programme

  • In addition to their six Diploma Programme subjects, full Diploma Programme students must also complete:

          • Theory of Knowledge (TOK) – taught over two years
          • Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) – reflecting on experiences and learning outcomes
          • An Extended Essay (EE) research paper on a topic of their choice

          • **All three components must be completed and passed in addition to the six subjects of study

            • These subjects comprise up to 240 hours of instruction over two years

            • French B (must have French 8,9, 10 to enrol)
            • French ab initio (beginner’s – less than two year’s experience)
            • Chemistry
            • Physics

            • These subjects meet at least 150 hours of instruction over two years

Additional courses (fulfilling provincial requirements)

  • Full diploma students will cross-enroll in two BC provincial courses (online) to support skill development in the IB Programme – Composition 11and Foundations of Inquiry 12
  • All Group 3 students will enroll in Contemporary Indigenous Studies 12 (CIS)to meet BC Dogwood graduation requirements
  • Partial program students in non-Group 3 courses will have the option to register for CIS if this graduation requirement cannot fit in their schedule.

IB Diploma Courses (partial program)

  • Students can undertake Diploma Courses for post secondary credit or for advanced preparation in post secondary areas
  • Usually these are completed at the Higher Level as most HL subjects receive direct post secondary transfer credit
  • Transfer credit for specific institutions can be found by looking up the ‘BC Transfer Guide’ or by checking the IBO website (www.ibo.org)

IB Retreat

  • As part of their CAS requirement, a group of students apply to be retreat leaders. Selected students are responsible for planning all aspects of an IB Retreat for full diploma grade 11 and 12 students.
  • While on retreat, all IB classes are cancelled – the expectation is that all full IB Diploma students attend the retreat.

Potential IB Students – what we want to see …

  • Students applying to the IB Diploma Programme (Full or Diploma Courses) should demonstrate some the following qualities:
        • a commitment to an academically rigorous program
        • able to communicate well in oral and written work
        • strong record of consistent attendance
        • excellent work habits
        • high level of participation in class
        • willingness to work outside of school hours on school activities
        • an ability to manage their time
        • willingness to seek extra assistance on own time as needed
        • some involvement in activities outside of school
        • an awareness of and interest in current, local and international events

Application Process

  • Two step procedure:
  • Complete the Common Application 2028
  • Fill out either a full Diploma supplement or a Diploma courses supplement – NOT BOTH

  • All areas of the application must be completed, and only complete applications will be accepted
  • Forms are available at www.seaquamib.com
  • Application deadline is February 2, 2026 (late applicants may be wait listed)

Application Process con’t

  • Print a hard copy of the application:
        • Please ensure that all parts are complete
        • Please enclose the non-refundable application, IB examinations registration and Managebac fee of $400
  • After the application is handed in:
        • Applications will be reviewed
        • An interview time will be given to the student
        • Once the interview is complete, the applications will be reviewed again, and acceptance letters will be generated (expect them prior to Spring Break)
        • All fees are non-refundable once accepted into the program
        • Be sure to record relevant fee dates as noted in the application. It is your responsibility to ensure payment by the due dates on the schedule.
