Engage in conversations: dinner table, living room couch, going for a walk, going on a bike ride, while hiking, etc.)

When at a restaurant, grocery story, out in nature, be descriptive, ask meaningful questions as a conversational piece
Using the “Rose, Thorn, and Bud” activity to see what was a success in their day (rose), a challenge (thorn), and a bud (potential/opportunity).
Use lots of prepositions!
Following directions depends on several other skills, including hearing, language processing, understanding (vocabulary and concepts), attending, sequencing, and working memory. Following directions is at the heart of learning and can directly impact a child’s ability to perform daily routines, develop socially, and to be academically successful within the classroom.

How do we go beyond with the question, “How was school today?” . Asking really good questions gets meaningful, deep answers. By speaking to your child each day, not only do you get to bond with them, you also really get to know them and they also get to know you!

it is okay to speak in your primary language at home versus not speaking. Having a solid foundation in their first language helps students with acquiring their second language. And when you do speak in English, don’t worry about making mistakes. Perseverance and effort are more important than perfection, and when parents role model that, students are more likely to keep trying and to see mistakes as a normal part of the learning process.

The earlier you get your children used to sharing with you, the more likely it will be that they continue to do so as they become teenagers.
